Maybe living in a nice area of the city is a little steep but there are affordable neighborhoods in Jefferson, St. Tammany, Plaquemines, St. Charles, and St. John.
So it's an affordable place to live if you choose not to live there
Makes sense

This is unequivocally a good thing for New Orleans and the state. I really don't get all the hate. This, DXC, and many smaller companies show that NOLA has finally found its post-oil & gas future for white collar jobs.

My guess is that you were not working for a "little" under market, in Louisiana, you were working very much under market rate......we don't like paying for things in Louisiana whether its the service, the product or the wage.
I was def under market at the time. I got my couple years experience and discovered how much under I was. I recall on my exit interview I was asked by the big boss what the offer I got might be since I didn't even try to get them to match. I wasn't wrong, he wouldn't have been able to reasonably make a counter offer. Wished me luck and moved on.

When that happened, was it a demand issue from outside that dictated the salary, i.e. was it because enough people did not have the need for IT in terms of what you did, or was it a function that your boss operated under the illusion that he could not pay you that and you did not need that because after all the cost of living
in Louisiana was "so low"
I'm always interested in finding out why Louisiana companies tend to lowball employees and basically force needed talent to outside the state to get what they are worth in the market

I really would not call East Jefferson "outside" the city. From Metairie to downtown it's maybe 15 minutes without traffic and if you know how t get around, maybe 30 minutes with traffic.....St Tammany, yeah that's way out as is St. Charles or St. John.....but in places like Dallas and Houston, commuting for 30 minutes each way is something of a norm

cough...bullshite.. tourism, taxes and of course lots of crime; learn to love'em. This shithole will never be nothing in the tech world. Ask IBM in BR.

It was for a state government entity but not civil service. Their model was to hire fresh grads with the knowledge they'd lose most of them in 2 to 5 years. And there are a few small time consulting firms in the BR and New Orleans area but their projects in general are small time compared to firms in larger markets. And over the past decade those firms have been trying to get into the Houston market as well with mixed results.
There's a lack of large companies willing to spend money on IT in Louisiana.

Its super easy for telecom drillers to put in new lines. The soil there is so damn soft, you could tape a spoon to the end of a fishing pole and still be drilling a mile a day. Got a lot of fiber going in under New Orleans.
