Any Austin locals want to fill us in on the rest of the story? Who was pushing for this and who was against it?

The Zilker Park Vision Plan will no longer be considered by the Austin city council, according to Mayor Kirk Watson, possibly killing the controversial $200 million plan.
Watson wrote that the plan would be "shelved" in his email newsletter, sent after three council members shared earlier in the day on Monday they wouldn't support the plan.
Many community members rallied against some of the more controversial items in the plan, including the proposed construction of new parking garages and the restoration or possible relocation of the old Zilker Hillside Theatre.

No clue about this, but I got a nice chuckle out of the Polo Field Lawn...as if that would ever go over well these days in Austin.
Now, out in the suburbs...sure, but those on the ponies would have to dodge the Urban Outdoorsmen half the time if in Austin.

Is this where that serial killer has been working?

The park is already an amazing park. Not sure why they gotta mess with it too much.

I would assume the road closures and polo field (WTF who asked for that?) would be the two main points of contention. Not sure why the hell they think they need a polo field in Zilker.

Its currently there. Been there. The name has stuck. It will always be referred to as the polo fields.

Apparently they wanted to build 3 parking garages and a "welcome center" too. Sounds like a bunch of unnecessary bullshite

The parking garage and messing with the ampitheater is what killed the plan. There are other parts of the plan like restoring wooded areas, erosion control and new trails that most everyone agrees with. So hopefully the city will take out the 2 controversial items and approve the remainder. The plan was done by a firm started by an 4 people, one an LSU Landscape Architecture alum and I did an internship with them in Aspen a hundred years ago.

After you're done admiring my trophies, could you please take down my picture?

Must be nice to have $200 mil to throw at a park. Meanwhile, Nola is dumping doo doo into the river because of its decrepit sewerage system

How are they gonna funnel money through their buddies if they don’t spend $200M turning a park into a park?

There's literally nothing wrong with that park, other than fatties have to walk to get to it. Leave it alone.
