Then he's an idiot. I have Audi Care and haven't had to spend a cent on maintenance on my SQ5. It even still has the original brakes at almost 69000 miles and they tell me that I have at least 10k left on them.

He's also had at least two or three recalls, though to Audi's credit they took care of him.

Well, of course they have. That's the law regarding recalls.

We looked at those and got a XC-60.

Q3

Is a compact SUV, the BMW equivalent is the X1.

Q5 is Audi's X3 competitor.

Q5 is the only answer if all you're worried about is having a "Premium German CUV"

come back to the board & brag when your warranty ends and you hit 100k miles on the ODO.

Not a fan of either 3 but if I had my choice I would go with the Q5. I am not sure why people spend the money for the X3 or Q3. I call them the midget SUV. You would probably be better off buying something like a newer Toyota 4runner for her.

why not a Toyota, Honda, etc.? Is this a status thing?

Look for Q5 pre owned in NOLA, BR, Houston and anywhere else you feel comfortable driving to. Search once a week until it has the specs you like. Grab the 100K warranty and enjoy the savings.

And get AWD. Better for the young drivers

BMW is the biggest piece of shite ever manufactured.

Plastic parts that are hugely expensive to replace. I just sold my daughters X5. Worst car I ever owned.

I will never buy anything German again.

Got her an Infinity and she loves it. No problems in the 4 months I have had it.

Stay away from BMW.

Who the frick gets a teenage daughter an Audi or a BMW?

Got my daughter a 2006 325i with 145,000 miles on it three years ago for a steal. My son is now driving it at 160,000. Minor things here and there but no major issues.

Well, that's not at all what I'm saying. I think 16 year olds can have plenty of nice things. You can get them a very nice, dependable car, that isn't considered a luxury vehicle.

And of course, there are exceptions to everything. I just am speaking from experience recently with 16 year old high school girls. They have the right intentions, but IN GENERAL, they aren't super responsible with their first vehicles. Sticking them in a luxury vehicle just makes it that much more stressful.

IN GENERAL, I think it's a better idea to give them a year or so in a reliable, but nice, vehicle that you don't fear getting a little beat up, and that doesn't cost a fortune to repair.

Not to mention, you don't start them off with a vehicle that is tough to improve on. It's a nice incentive for teenagers to know they can work hard, be responsible, and as time goes on, can upgrade what the drive.

I'm not saying what your parents did was wrong at all. I'm just trying to give the OP some GENERAL advice, and things to think about.

That being said, BMW is still a big pile of steaming shite.

I don't disagree with what you're saying but OP isn't buying a car for an average teenage girl pulled from the general population. It's his daughter. So I assume he has a good understanding of how she behaves, and was looking for advice on which car we prefer of the three in question.

You said, generally speaking, that it's ok for a 16 year old girl to have a very nice, dependable car - that isn't luxury. How can you justify drawing the line (seemingly arbitrarily) at "very nice?" Why not stop at "nice" and dependable? Why not just dependable?

I guess what I'm saying is that there's no "right" way to do it. Different lessons are learned from different experiences. Speaking, in GENERAL, I don't think it's unwise to buy your child a very-very nice car, or even a very-very-very nice car if 1) you think your child is responsible enough to own it, 2) you think the child will benefit from it (in whatever ways you value) and 3) you can afford it.

Also take into account high school parking lots, er demolition derby. Both of my kids' cars got supremely jacked up in the parking lot.

Don't own one out of warranty or extended warranty unless you're capable of swapping parts yourself.
