Pecker, I will say this, a luxury car is a poor choice for a 16 year old girl learning to drive. They back into, bump into, park too close and open into, etc. etc. etc. Cut curbs too close, run into garbage cans, you name it. Looking at a beautiful luxury car all beat up sucks.

I think it's a lot smarter, if you have money, to purchase something less expensive and easier to fix, for at least the first year or 2 of them learning to drive. Then, if you got the money, move up to luxury. Just mho.

I honestly think it is a bit irresponsible to put your teens into higher end euro cars. it'll draw a variety of issues they don't need.

why not a Toyota, Honda, etc.? Is this a status thing?

So what if you can afford it? Teen drivers will always dent and frick up a car. Makes no sense in buying them a new BMW.

There are two ways to look at it, and I don't think either approach is better than the other.

1) You buy your kid a shitty car because you think they'll treat it like shite and you want to teach them that if they want nice things, they can pay for those things themselves.

2) You but your kid a nice car and tell them that they have to take care of it because they aren't getting another one if they damage it. You do this to teach them to take care of nice things.

I had a nice car in high school. So did my sister. Both would be considered "luxury" vehicles. I kept mine through college because I took care of it. My sister fricked hers up but she had to pay to fix it...and then she took care of it. I went to a private school and most of the kids had nice cars. It's not as outrageous as posters on the OT act like it is.

The Q3 is small, very small. The X3 that I own is more fun to drive than the Q5 that I have driven with the Q5 having more comfortable seats. I have the x35i though so it is faster than the 4cyl version.

I’m sure you already know this because it is common sense, but everything you have to do to maintain German cars is expensive as shite.

is the the not-so-subtle-brag thread?

what the hell happened to buying teenagers a clunker and let them get a job making some extra money if they want to upgrade to something nicer?

It depends on the kid. I think it's silly to make a blanket statement that 16 year olds can't have nice things. Both my sister and I had nice, new cars in high school. My best friend drove an M3. He kept that car pristine. That car was his baby.

It depends on the kid, what you want him/her to get out of the experience, what you can afford.

insurance company bean counters beg to differ.

your anecdotal evidence has been noted...and dismissed by 100 years of auto insurance database analysis.

16 y/o with a rocket......forget luxury, that's not wise. while your buddy may have survived, it's really not a great idea to hand over that kind of speed to a kid.

ETA: point in case - two nights ago I encountered a Woodlands HS kid in a dated C63 Benz. He was driving like a complete a-hole.....easily hit 100 mph on Woodlands Pkwy while shifting lanes abruptly.

Well, that's not at all what I'm saying. I think 16 year olds can have plenty of nice things. You can get them a very nice, dependable car, that isn't considered a luxury vehicle.

And of course, there are exceptions to everything. I just am speaking from experience recently with 16 year old high school girls. They have the right intentions, but IN GENERAL, they aren't super responsible with their first vehicles. Sticking them in a luxury vehicle just makes it that much more stressful.

IN GENERAL, I think it's a better idea to give them a year or so in a reliable, but nice, vehicle that you don't fear getting a little beat up, and that doesn't cost a fortune to repair.

Not to mention, you don't start them off with a vehicle that is tough to improve on. It's a nice incentive for teenagers to know they can work hard, be responsible, and as time goes on, can upgrade what the drive.

I'm not saying what your parents did was wrong at all. I'm just trying to give the OP some GENERAL advice, and things to think about.

That being said, BMW is still a big pile of steaming shite.

I will say that I am more focused on safety. BUT, I can find plenty of safety in a mid-range vehicle......doesn't have to be a German luxury brand.

Something that will protect her for when she totals it in a few weeks.

Something with a sunroof so when she drives off into a lake texting some beta and driving she'll be able to swim out and not drown.

Do yourself a favor, don't get her a German car. Basic maintenance is more expensive, and reliability remains an issue.

A friend if mine has a 2015 Q5 and he always bitches that everything is always more expensive than his previous car (a Honda) was. He's also had at least two or three recalls, though to Audi's credit they took care of him.

I just can't see a good reason to get a teen a German luxury model.

Look into the Mazda CX-5 or Nissan Rogue, or Honda CR-V and save yourself the trouble.
