quote:

A 16-year-old Atlanta boy is being hailed as a hero after he drowned while trying to help save four children from strong currents off the Florida Panhandle.

Bryce Brooks and his family were vacationing in Pensacola with other families whose kids grew up together, according to Bryce’s stepfather, Shivy Brooks, who spoke at a news conference in Atlanta on Monday.

The group was in Perdido Key when currents began pulling four younger kids away from the beach on April 6. Bryce sprung into action, running with two others to help the children, Brooks said.

"Being selfless, our son Bryce, while being pulled by currents himself, literally called for help. But not for himself, he was calling out for the little kids he was looking out for,” Shivy said.

And then Bryce was pulled under the water.

A family friend named Charles “Chuck” Johnson II went in the water to help Bryce but was also pulled under. Both of them drowned.

“We’re never going to get to see Bryce grow up to be the full man that he was going to be," Bryce's mom, Crystal Brooks, said. "But we know that he stepped into his manhood to save those children. And that makes me proud."

She said nothing will take away even an ounce of her pain "but it makes me proud of our son and what he sacrificed."

"And I’ll forever hold that,” she said.

An education group called Get Your Teach on began a fundraiser for the Brooks family. It had raised more than $83,000 as of Wednesday.

Saw this on a local news site:

quote:

Bryce was a student at Maynard Jackson High School. He played the piano and produced musical beats.

“Definitely into fashion. He was a member of the fashion club here at Maynard, honor roll student, A/B honor roll. He just made the honor roll,” said Crystal Brooks.

God speed Bryce and Chuck. May your families find peace in the fact you laid your lives down saving others.

That’s awful. One of my biggest fears for my kids are undertow. The beach and those tricky currents are unforgiving.

Rip to this kid. He’s a hero. May God take him in His arms.

Maynard Jackson is an inner city school in the Grant Park neighborhood of Atlanta. It covers that neighborhood and Summerhill. Both are very nice sections of the city.

I wonder how old the children are?

If it was a rip current they don't pull you under, just pull you away from the beach into deeper water, but weakens, then it's time to swim out of it.

It sounds like a panic situation and maybe the teen and Chuck tried to swim back directly into the rip current which will not work and sure way to drown.

Kinda important to know how to handle rips and undertows even young children, by at least 7-8 yrs old.

Terrible. An open water rescue is a damn dangerous thing. I don't care how strong a swimmer you are.

Man that's sad. RIP to this young man. He was obviously raised very well, he gave up his life to save others without thinking.

Am I to assume the 4 younger children passed as well?

Exactly. Drowning usually happens because the swimmer gets exhausted by panic swimming against it. Very dangerous as the casual beach goer doesn't understand this.

Hell, I do and am still at great risk of panicking and doing the wrong thing too. I pray I'm never in a situation to experience one or have to make the decision to go into one to rescue someone.

I don’t really wade out very far anymore. Just kinda scared to do so after all these stories. Maybe media just covers them more (and we see more with the internet) or maybe more people are visiting now a days.

I used to think nothing of going out last where I can stand, when I was young.
