This is a really good response.

I’m surprised at all the anti- Atlanta sentiment here. It’s a big city, lots of F500 and mid size companies, diverse economy, large airport to anywhere in the world.

I can get the same thing in Charlotte, with out nearly the amount of "grittiness" to use Pettifoger's term.

It's got a sizable swath of ghetto and this is an LA-centric board. Of course, it's ridiculous for LA residents to penalize Atlanta on that...but I digress.
It's also a suburb and small-city centric board.

I'd say this is more due to the age of the average poster here. People are more focused on raising their families in a good school district over being in the trendy part of a large city.

Then you have curmudgeons like me who lived it up in my 20s and early 30s living in large cities but want nothing to do with that lifestyle anymore. Been there, done that.

90% of the atlanta haters on here have only ever been downtown for an event, if they've ever been at all. It'd be like judging all of new orleans only for the bums pissing and robbing on bourbon street.

Most people don't seem to realize Atlanta has many fairly distinct little neighborhoods all with their own appeal. And even getting OTP areas like dunwoody/sandy springs/vinings are all nice as well. People that hate on atlanta simply have an axe to grind or only watch cnn

This. I have my gripes with the city, but the people who look at ATL and say "muh traffic, muh culcha, muh bums, etc." haven't been to and experienced places like Buckhead, Vinings, Druid Hills, Inman Park, Westside, and so on. Relative to other cities, downtown ATL is not the center of all of the action and comparatively speaking to both Charlotte and Nashville is quite shitty. But Atlanta is so spread out that it's hard to assess it based off a couple of areas.

Atlanta is the most significant, most robust in most categories and probably has the most long-term advantages. It's the biggest economic and professional powerhouse of the three, obviously. It's probably on the starkest short-term decline, though. Hard to say whether that's a legitimate worry beyond the near term. Charlotte is, in my opinion, a more boring Atlanta. But that has some advantages. It's less gritty than Atlanta. NC is probably a better overall state than Georgia in several regards. Lower ceiling, higher floor. Nashville is the most in vogue. You'll have to overpay for something that may be more fleeting. For long term economic and professional choices, it's probably 3rd on the list. But obviously attractive for younger people. I think Nashville has little that Charlotte or Atlanta don't have, but it's more front and center in Nashville whereas such things might get lost in the larger and more business-centric Charlotte/Atlanta. All three are aesthetically/topographically nice cities.

This is pretty reasonable. While Charlotte doesn’t get the pub, it’s growing basically every bit as fast as Nashville. A combination of good and bad comes with growth like that.

Nashville is way more touristy obviously. Again, good and bad. More stuff going on, more events, etc. But you always have to deal with the tourist crowds and lines out the door for any place that’s “hot”. To me, that would get awfully annoying as a full time resident.

Charlotte has a much better airport and is drivable to more interesting places. Quick weekend getaways to more touristy places like Asheville and Charleston satisfy my itch, without having to deal with it constantly.

Sure, it lacks some character, but whatever, the food scene is constantly improving, the beer scene is great, traffic is getting worse but generally manageable, the economy is very resilient, etc.

Don’t think there is a “correct” choice between those 2. Depends on what you want

Atlanta is a different animal, but it has more charms than it seems. Though to be honest, after going there for work 10 times or so since I moved south, I’m quite happy I ended up in Charlotte (interviewed for one job in Atlanta)

True, but as is frequently shown, people ignore that there are tons of historic neighborhoods in cities like Atlanta or Dallas where people live in the city with their families. Many of these are fairly conservative, people live in SFHs and have yards and pools, etc.

Granted, the entry fee is high and in many places private school is a must, but this board often ignores this possibility and it becomes suburb w/ kids or in town in hipster neighborhoods like these are the only options.

Only downside with Charlotte is that if you’re a Diamond medallion sky miles Member you’re fricked.

Delta/ATL is a legit selling point for Atlanta. People who fly through ATL may dislike it (although it compares REALLY well to any similar airport of size), but it's great as a local.

I love flying to small cities and their airports, or flying in and out of Love in Dallas, but ATL is a really nice resource when you combine it with Delta status.

Atlanta really depends on where in Atlanta you live and work. Things have definitely gotten worse here over the past few months. A couple days ago I was working downtown and had some unpleasant experience. These two gentlemen walked past me and said "acting like you workin for somebody cracka" then "you dead cracka, you dead cracka"

About an hour after that, i was elsewhere downtown, and a fellow yelled out at me "White people aint shite!" as I walked past. Then as I proceeded down the street, another scholar walking towards me began throwing breadcrumbs from a loaf of bread in my path. Of course I assumed he was trying to feed some birds or something , so I changed my path to go around him the other way. He then threw bread crumbs at me adns tarted hitting me with them. As I walked away he said "yea you better walk fast, you know whats going to happen to you"

Overall, downtown has gotten pretty bad. Without students at GSU and without the working class in downtown, the already meh downtown has become a total shithole. Just a ton of bums lining the streets. Id recommend going somewhere with a nicer downtown like Charlotte. They also have a nice light rail system that is expanding.
