This is actually exactly what I'm in to.

Atlanta for the economy, women, and job opportunities.
Charlotte if you don't like Atlanta because of the traffic, rap music, or black people (and you work in banking). (Kidding aside, Charlotte is a nice city with beautiful scenary and pretty fun pockets of things to do).
Nashville if you're from a bottom-5 state in education, like hick-hop, and girls with hyphenated names that think Taylor Swift songs are the accompanying soundtrack to their life story. Watching COVID-19 hit that house of cards, gig economy was a small highlight in the overall shittiness of the pandemic.

I’m surprised at all the anti- Atlanta sentiment here. It’s a big city, lots of F500 and mid size companies, diverse economy, large airport to anywhere in the world.
People from Louisiana HATE Atlanta. Part of it is likely (not kidding) the Falcons/Saints rivalry. Other part is, they view it as a "sell-out" city. All the positive things you mentioned: massive GDP and company diversification, biggest airport in the world, as well as all the good that comes with actual diversity, they see as a "selling out," to cope with the fact more people leave Louisiana faster than virtually any other place in the country.

Atlanta and Memphis are almost the same distance from my doorstep.
I'll take Memphis all day every day and I hate Memphis.

Living in Atlanta city limits is not the same as living 30 minutes from downtown. Plenty of nice areas to live in surrounding Atlanta if you make decent money. I bought a new house in Smyrna two years ago. Just a few miles from the Battery where the Braves play and love it.
I used to go to Charlotte for work alot 10-15 years ago and while nice it was boring as hell. Nothing was open past 9 or 10pm etc. Maybe it's changed since then.
My biggest gripe with ATL is the traffic as it is bad almost every day depending on which way you're going. One accident and it turns into a nightmare which happens frequently too.

Looking to buy here as well. Really like the area and the proximity to a lot of things. Let me know if you need a neighbor

Last thing I'll say is, this is such an interesting conversation - considering one is not like the other.
The conversation should be, "Nashville or Charlotte," and "Atlanta or Houston/Dallas." If you look at size, public transportation, Gross Domestic Product, Infrastructure, Jobs, facilities, etc... Charlotte and Nashville aren't on the radar.
Again - if you're from a small town in the south and looking to get to a bigger city than I really would look towards Charlotte (Nashville, unless you're in healthcare, is going to collapse worse than Tampa did in the housing crisis - DM me for equity/market research support).
The GDP for Atlanta is #10 in the US ($397B annually).
Charlotte comes in at #21 ($179B annually), but looking to move up after some banking consolidation.
Nashville is #34 ($132B annually) with no real economic driver behind tourism (which isn't a ton in the grand scheme of things in terms of dollars - cc NOLA), and healthcare. For context, here are more economically sound cities than Nashville: Cleveland (lmao), Cincy (lol), Orlando (sup, Mickey), Riverside, CA (where is this?), Baltimore, Sacramento (laughing yet?), and Indianapolis.
Basically, you're better off in a lot more boring places than Nashville. Unless you're 21-25 looking to tag girls from Mississippi who think they've made it to NYC, this isn't an actual place to consider unless you've got some ties to country music or healthcare.

But you always have to deal with the tourist crowds and lines out the door for any place that’s “hot”.
This is off the mark. If you are dealing with a lot of tourists as a Nashville resident, then you are going to the wrong places.

If you're looking at Smyrna, just be selective. Especially if you're focused on getting away from hoodrat stuff. It's very convenient though, and that general area (Westside/West Buckhead/Smyrna/Cumberland/SS) is where we spend most of our time.

This is spot-on.
I enjoy both Charlotte and Atlanta. Don't think I could live in Nashville.

Charlotte. More options well within driving distance if you want to get away from Charlotte
Or flying given the hub.
When I interviewed for a job there the joke was, 2 hours to beach by car or plane (i.e. Caribbean). Just as easy to do a weekend get away
