It looks like those are not structural but part of a barrier to keep marine traffic from hitting the actual supports.

Not sure what those corroded pieces were there for but it’s clearly not for support. The one he shows at the end that “ain’t eat up” doesn’t have those.

Most likely since the ones closest to the bank don’t have those.

I wonder if that’s remnants of an old cofferdam or something to hold up form work during construction. It looks like steel I Beams. The internal supports for that bent appear to be concrete and in decent shape.

The scale of it is interesting. Going to cost a fortune to upgrade and repair one day.

The pillars of the main Atchafalaya bridge do not look like that. That's most likely some random location.

Barge bollards. They are like sacrificial anodes on a boat hull and designed to protect the load bearing supports from marine impact damage.

Somebody doesn’t know what supports are.

Like how he says Garyville and the text describes the Atchafalaya….

I also like how he says “gotta be careful coming over this bridge.” Like, what are we supposed to do differently?

I read on another site this is what it is. Guy claimed to be a bridge engineer or work on bridges or something like that I can’t remember.

This seems like a good enough thread to remind people that a study came out several years back now that found more than 40,000 bridges in the US are structurally deficient.

Member when we spent almost a trillion dollars on this?

quote:

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, also known as the stimulus package, was a massive U.S. government economic stimulus bill signed by President Obama to combat the Great Recession, aiming to create jobs, boost economic activity, and invest in long-term growth through infrastructure

Don't think I've seen any widespread infrastructure investments or improvements--from rail, to bridges, to internet, to roads, etc--since that time. Has anyone else?

Just one of many trillions of dollars just stolen/pissed away.

It’s the I-10 bridge over the Choctawhatchee River in Caryville, Florida.

They're just old and dirty. That bridge will never be replaced.

That’s not the I 10 bridge over the Atchafalaya in Louisiana. The bridge pictured is two separate spans and the I 10 bridge over the River in Louisiana is a single span. The eastbound lanes and westbound lanes of I 10 are separated, but converge at the bridge at Whiskey Bay.

Have to finish the one between Golden Meadow and Leeville first.

This is a prime example of why low IQ people don’t need social media.

What you are looking at is most likely the false work used during construction to support either piling operations and or concrete cap placement. Once the concrete was cured those driven steel piles were no longer needed. It was probably cheaper/faster to leave them in place and just use new ones on the next cap.
