At what point will you realize that protecting the general population from the idiots is what they're trying to do. You'd have to be completely oblivious/addicted to be at a CASINO , BAR , RESTAURANT , or MOVIE THEATER right now. You can literally drink, gamble, eat, and watch movies from your house.

Basically save the .1% of the population most at risk of dying from ANY and EVERY infectious respiratory disease. Damn the 99.9% that need to make a living and pay bills.

You are still affecting the 99.9% of people who are supposed to contribute to the economy. It's not just about the elderly and immunocompromised. The economy will be worse off if you let this run its course.

This is getting exhausting attempting to explain it to you five year olds.

Time is not what people are worried about wasting.

Temporarily? You need to understand that business going under because of this will not lead to people temporarily being out of work.

There's also real data and examples of economic collapses causing major public health challenges.

And that's completely fair. It's why there are economic relief/stimulus packages in place for people to cover their expenses for a month out of work.

It's why many agencies controlling electricity, water, sewage, rent, and internet are willing to hold bill collection during this time.

Why would they do this if they didn't know the repercussions that would take place if this virus spread everywhere.

Never. Being able to have a moderate opinion is a thing of the past. If you don't fully support all the flattening of the curve measures then you're an insensitive jerk. Who cares if you don't have a job, the important thing is that you don't have the flu!

You keep saying this. Why will it be worse off? By what mechanism will some additional (vs letting it run its course) old people dying in overwhelmed hospitals be more damaging to the economy than what we are doing now?

You think monetary allocation is holding anything up here? Really?

I know for a fact that federal funds for some research scientists working on vaccines for previous corona viruses was halted even though those working on them felt those vaccines would give us a head start on fighting any novel corona virus.

That research is --as of last week -- now being revived.

If that's the one example I know from firsthand experience, I tend to doubt it is the only one.

So you are just going to ignore the fact that if that same business owner has bilateral interstitial pneumonia that progresses to ARDS leaving him in an ICU for 3 weeks, THAT wouldn't tank his business?

A 40 year old with that much medical debt, who would likely survive the virus, would be in too much of a hole because we didn't take precautions seriously.

Please stop pretending that those funding decisions were made in a bubble.

As if the Federal government was 100% wisely spending it's trillions of dollars of "revenue" except for that part about medical research which we neanderthal Republicans were holding up.

We just went to zero interest rates and $700B in QE. At some point, it's not going to be enough.

That's what we're saying.

Yes the point is to save lives, but a big part of this is about resources. If we lollidick around and everyone gets sick and has to go to the hospital there will be no resources left. No rooms, etc.. And then they will be deciding who gets treated and who doesn't.

Everyone needs to stop overreacting and being whiny little bitches. At the end of the day, its going to be okay.

That's a hypothetical about an anomaly case vs the actual reality of ALL small businesses and everyone else who works being affected. My God what a dumb thing to say. It would be dumb even if healthy people weren't easily beating this virus.

Sole-Proprietorship? Possibly.

Small-business. Not if it was run even reasonably.

Are we assuming he doesn't have insurance? shite. Even the crappiest of Bronze Obamacare plans have a maximum OOP of $20k. Which the hospital would offer 0% over 5 years on.

Hardly enough to consider him in "too much of a hole".

Because it affects more people than just the elderly you fricking moron. No nation has the resources to deal with that many people sick in a period of a couple weeks. We literally saw what happened to China three weeks ago..

quote:

Early indications of COVID-19’s impact on the Chinese economy are worse than initially forecast. Surveys of China’s manufacturing and services sector plunged to record lows in February, automobile sales sank a record 80 percent, and China’s exports fell 17.2 percent in January and February. The official data confirmed a widespread slowdown in economic activity foreshadowed in low pollution levels and depressed shipping traffic, among other informal barometers. Analysts have sharply revised down estimates of Chinese growth, with many now predicting a drop in first quarter GDP, the first contraction since China began reporting quarterly data in 1992. As COVID-19 spreads, China’s economic recovery will be challenged as demand from other countries drops as they cope with the virus.

What you fail to understand is that this virus does have an impact on morbidity for many, many people. Not just those 50 and up. If everyone is sick at once, the health care sector will be in disarray and cause small businesses to nose dive. If you can't prepare with a rainy day fund to get through a couple weeks, you will not survive the economic hardships of "riding this out."

What on earth are you talking about

So you are just fabricating scenarios that do not consider extrapolation of actual risk?

In the end, that business owner would lose in both scenarios right? I honestly am not following what it is you are trying to convey.

Is that due to the virus/healthcare shortages, or the forced quarantine of huge segments of the working population?
