Asking your employer for a raise

Do you ask them for a certain amount you have in mind or do you let them decide how much they think you should be compensated?

This is not going to turn out well.
Additionally, generally bad move to ask for a raise. Either you earn it and it is granted. Or you earn it and it isn’t granted and you look for something else.

I always went into the discussion with
3 numbers.
1. The number I ask for
2. The number I'd consider a win
3. The number I'd accept
I also always decided before I ever had the discussion what I should do if the answer was no. Do I decide to walk, or do I accept the answer? Also consider how non-salary offers would impact your response.
Last, be ready to explain why you're worth more before you ever throw out a number.

Back in early March my boss and I had a brief discussion about plans that he was working on to give me a raise. I haven’t heard anything from him since.
I’ve been with this company for 15 years and at the new site for 6 months.
Since arriving I have eliminated the need for 3 employees by taking over their positions and implementing procedures that have directly resulted in a better relationship with the client and saving the company money.

Again, either you earn it and it is given; or you earn it and it isn’t given and you shop around for something that you feel pays you what you are worth.
If you lay your cards out in the table and it is not reciprocated; what are you going to do? Even if they do give you a raise, you will now be labeled as the guy who thinks he deserves more - and that is worse outcome.

I’m actually shocked by some of the solid advise in this thread.
I think a lot depends on your relationship with your boss. My last company I went and asked him straight up and he politly told me he couldn’t. I went on to find something else pretty quickly, but kept a good enough relationship with him to do some consulting.
My current job, I wouldn’t ask and when the time comes i’ll walk in with a competing offer loaded up.

We started increasing our workforce yesterday and by next week will be at full capacity with 2 major projects starting after July 4th holiday.
So, yeah. I think it’s time I bring up that raise that he mentioned in March.

Prove what you’re worth. Go out and do some research and show them you’re below the market rate.

There are ways to put your name and resume out there on the web.You may get a job much better than what you have.
