re: Asking your employer for a raise

Depends on your boss, honestly. Last time I got a raise I just went to my boss and explained that I'd like a raise and listed the reasons. Admitted I didn't have a competing job offer and didn't want it to come to that. I mentioned how much I wanted and how I wasn't making market rate.

My boss wasn't able to get me the raise right then and there but kept fighting for it, and a couple of months later I got it.

that is what I meant by “look for something else”. Go get paid what your worth somewhere else if they won’t pay you.

I had a Cost Accountant who was great at her job almost leave, and was making 15k less than market (she was there before I became her supervisor); I pushed to give her market value and she stayed. I asked for a raise twice. Once when I was 23 asking for a 5k raise because I thought I deserved it (65k to 70k) and I got laughed off (I instantly regretted that move but hey, young and stupid) I was laid off a year later. Three years ago, I asked for a raise when they doubled my workload. I kinda wanted out so I asked for a ridiculous raise (25%), and they gave me 20%! I have taken another job since and I would not ask for a raise unless I had another offer and was completely unhappy or if they were just dumping work on me. As a controller, I do have sleepless nights. At some point, money won’t be worth the loss of my sanity.

Yeah well you probably have lost a ton of talent or you’re a small outfit. Most HR won’t justify a raise without an action. Merit or otherwise.
