I once saw a doc which showed a training class for phone marketers
They were taught to target old people, especially widow(er)s, Their children are grown and gone, and they are lonely. The students are taught to begin not w/a sales pitch but w/"Hello, how are you today?" - good manners requiring a response to a question.
Psychlogically, the longer people stay on the phone the less likely they are to hang up, as they feel "invested" in the call. So if you keep lonely old people on the phone by showing interest in them, you soften them up for the pitch.

I am not sure it is clear to most people what is really going on in these scams. First, these are not random attempts to get cash, they have a system and it does not rely upon the victim being mentally impaired in some way. Instead it relies upon something which is not commonly understood, older people process information much differently which allows scammers to use that to their advantage. Dementia is not a prerequisite to be victimized.
I’m glad as an elderly person you have not been a victim. I hope that does not change. Just be careful of assuming only feebleminded people can be fooled. The folks doing this are professionals and we are all amateurs. Be kind to each other, except for scammers.

what actions? His administration just proposed a $103,265 fee on every cap-subject H-1B petition and replaced the random lottery with a system favoring higher-paid, higher-skilled applicants. Saying we need legitimate H-1B talent while cracking down on companies using the program for cheap labor isn’t contradictory, Jake. It’s actually the entire point.
Granted, his 2nd term has still been incredibly disappointing, but to say he’s done nothing in terms of the H1B abuse is nonsense

lol. We went from “What actions?” to “well, he finally did something, but it’s no big deal” awfully fast.
And the fact that the H-1B workers you’ve personally encountered were mediocre, isn’t evidence that America should never recruit exceptional foreign talent. Correcting that distinction is exactly what these policies are intended to do.
And that’s been my experience with H1B’s as well. I work in corporate IT, I have a bit of experience on this topic..

I work in outside sales for home repairs, and anytime I close a deal with a 70+ year old that I think is losing their faculties, I always get family involved if possible. I would never rip anyone off regardless of age, but damn, older people are an easy target for the person that just doesn’t give a damn.

Maybe he knows who did the same thing to an older lady in Robert recently who just built a modest house to retire in. Yeah the victims were naive, but this scammer also said that he was a cop and had a warrant for her arrest. This was recently reported on I want to say wafb but it could've been wbrz. Leaning towards the former.
