Let's hope so. We need a regime change in the AP. Someone that will actually improve the infrastructure before taking hundreds of thousands under the table to approve these 500 lot subdivisions on two lane highways.

Matassa statement
quote:

This week, I experienced how an act of generosity can be twisted into a conspiracy against me for electoral gain and clickbait.

I have known Wayne Lawson for over 20 years. We worked together in construction and he comes from a good family. On several occasions, I provided Mr. Lawson with small loans so he could pay his bills. Mr. Lawson never paid me back, but I considered him a friend who had fallen on hard times. Last year, I paid off a debt Mr. Lawson incurred with a local finance company. I live my life by a moral code to share whatever blessings I have with others.

I do not know Wade Petite as well, but again I know he comes from a good family. He does have an extensive criminal record, which includes multiple arrests for simple assault, simple battery, domestic abuse battery and DWI. He was sued for legal malpractice for mishandling cases and, after an investigation; the Louisiana Supreme Court issued an order barring him from practicing law in Louisiana. Mr. Petite has an unhealthy and unnatural obsession with me, as he has been similarly obsessed with others.

The plot they hatched is an example of the politics of personal destruction. The truth is that Mr. Lawson is not an electoral threat to anyone. He has been defeated by wide margins in all five campaigns he has run since 1991. He was a friend, down on his luck, looking for work and help, in the wrong election at the wrong time. There was no bribe. There was an honest attempt to help a man out.
I take people at face value when they give me their word, and my word is my bond. Even after his attempt to smear me in the media, I ensured Mr. Lawson was still scheduled for an interview. He did not, however, show up for the interview. Instead, he went on a media junket. Mr. Lawson and Mr. Petite are agents of chaos. I reject the influence these negative elements have over our politics and our community.

These old AP guys live in their own world and think they can get away with anything.

They are so far removed from reality. It'll be great when the real world greats them.

Anyone here actually read the public bribery statute? Is Lawson a public official or employee? If so, was he asked to not perform an official duty of his public position ? What's the difference between this and a candidate paying someone to jump into a race to split a vote? What's the difference between this and rewarding a previous opponent with a job (or family member with a job) for an endorsement? It may sound ugly , but even Petite knows it was legal.

Keep in mind Louisiana Revised Statute 18:1461.5 entitled: Election offenses involving bribery, threats or intimidation of election officials or candidates; penalties
“A. No person shall knowingly, willfully, or intentionally:
(4)(a) Give or offer to give, directly or indirectly, any money or any thing of apparent present or prospective value to a candidate for public office for the purpose of securing the candidate’s withdrawal from an election.
B. Whoever violates any provision of this Section shall be fined not more than two thousand dollars or be imprisoned, with or without hard labor, for not more than two years, or both, for the first offense.”
C. In the trial of a person charged with a violation of this Section, either the bribe-giver or the bribe-taker may give evidence, or make affidavit against the other, and may receive immunity from prosecution in favor of the first informer, except for perjury in giving such testimony.

From what I can tell it would be a felony since hard labor is an option. I would assume it would be a misdemeanor if he only paid the fine or didn't get hard labor.

The Louisiana Criminal Code defines a felony as any crime for which an offender may be sentenced to death or imprisonment at hard labor. Unlike most states, which classify crimes as first-degree felonies, second-degree felonies, etc. and the punishment for each degree, the state of Louisiana lists the crimes that are classified as felonies and specifies the penalties for each crime.

Some examples of felony:

Examples of felony crimes in Louisiana are first and second degree murder, manslaughter, rape, first degree robbery, and battery of a police officer that results in the officer requiring medical attention. Also, some crimes that are normally classified as misdemeanors are escalated to felonies for repeat offenders. For example, a third theft offense and a third DUI offense are classified as felonies.

What is a misdemeanor?

Louisiana Criminal Code defines a misdemeanor as any crime other than a felony. Misdemeanor offenses are usually punished by a fine and/or up to a year of incarceration.
