The P-38 is an amazing plane and comes in a close second place to the Voight F4u-4 Corsair. The Corsair arrived later in WWII and were used mostly in the Pacific Theater, thus didn't get as much coverage by the media.
The F4U Corsair was faster and had a greater rate of climb than the P51, attributes which are important in dogfights. The Corsair was still in use in Korea.

When considering the immediate impact that it had for as long as it had, you’d be hard pressed to find one with a bigger impact.
Maybe the F-86.
Or the A-10. A lot of Cold War era soviet doctrine was driven by neutralizing the west’s ability to deploy A-10s.

I met Guy Bordelon, only Navy ace in Korea. He flew the Corsair, making him the last US ace in a prop-driven aircraft.

Dad had been flying the USMC version of the B-24 taking photographs of Japanese positions. He then flew the one VIP version the Marines had to fly Marine generals back to the states after the war ended.
When he got to Hawaii, they forgot to send him home (he was in the reserves) so he flew all the different aircraft like the Corsair (a favorite) the Marines had on the bases on Oahu.
One day the General came up and asked why he was still there, he said "no one sent me home". They augmented him into the Marines. 3 years in WWII, two tours of Korea, three tours of Vietnam.
When he got to Hawaii, they forgot to send him home (he was in the reserves) so he flew all the different aircraft like the Corsair (a favorite) the Marines had on the bases on Oahu.

I believe the F4U was used in Central America, by El Salvador I think, until like 1979.

My grandfather flew a British Spitfire. Somehow he was one o a handful that got to fly with the British Royal Air Force.

Most of the Eagle Squadron guys transferred to the USAAF, but a few chose to stay in the RAF. And there were a couple of Americans who were British subjects and were in the RAF before the war.

I can see merit in all the choices made here but given my choice I'm flying a F16 or A10 in WW2. Can you imagine how quick you'd be an ace?
