The Flying Tigers also had a hellofalot of field mods...but yeah, they pushed those warhawks to the limit.

The balls of all those pilots setting out across open water in a plane with little more than a compass for navigation.

ME 262...scary...then you realize it takes 1/4 of a mile to turn the MFer.

frick that, no self sealing gas tanks and hilariously little armor is a no go for me.

After many of the kinks worked out, the kill ratio was pretty darn good
It influenced the next generation of fighters. A game changer.
The strategy for defeating one was to destroy on the ground or upon takeoff. They owned the air

a lot depends on the time period, early war the spitefire, Me 109 or fw 190 were the best of their time early in the war but were quickly overtaken.
much like the evolution of CPU processors in computers, every ti,me you turn around the next advancement in evolution was a huge leap forward.
so as i said, it depends very much on the specific narrow time period as to what was the best plane. anything at the end of the war put to shame any planes flown at the start of the war.
at the end of the war you had 3 of the best planes ever:
the p-38 was the most maneuverable and forgiving plane with a stable flight platform that made it deadly accurate
the p-51 mustang was the sports car that did it all, hard to find anything bad to say about it
the hellcat was literally a flying tank that was ugly as hell but near impossible to shoot down because it was so well armored

The Brits and other Commonwealth pilots took on the bf-109s in their "Tomahawks" with great success in North Africa.

P-38 because my uncle flew one, and he flew a Spit, but I'll take the P-38.

Republic P-47 Thunderbolt. Brought to you by the same people who made the A10 which is officially named the Thunderbolt II.

Wasn't it the 109s that had the sand issues in the fuel line? Don't think FW 190s were in Africa.

Plus the right tactics. Altitude advantage, dive, one pass, haul arse.

190 did see action late in N. Africa.
Early non fuel injected spits had fuel problems when they nosed over to dive, carburetor would cut out under the negative g and give the other aircraft an advantage.

Depends at what stage of the war. The Japanese Zero was unmatched at its time during the war, whereas the Spitfire was probably the best overall plane in the war. It had so many manufacturing issues that delayed its usefulness in the war.

Spitfire couldn’t compete with the Messerschmidt without that high-octane gasoline made at the Standard Oil refinery in north Baton Rouge.
