A good baw who sometimes posts on TD has published a novel set in the 30s, 40s and 50s about three guys and two girls from a small Louisiana town who come of age as WWII approaches. One of the characters becomes a fighter pilot and over the course of two wars flies Hurricanes, Tomahawks, Hellcats and Panther jets. The author's descriptions of air warfare of these fighters against bf-109s, Stukas, Zeros and Mig-15s are excellent. Available on Amazon:

While the p-51 is the popular answer i really like the Corsair, which was considered just as good and later variants better then the P-51.

Messershmitt Me-262. First Jet Fighter. Luckily for us, dumbass Hitler tried to have them repurposed to carry bombs and barely had any in production towards the end of the war.

Anyone know why the P-51 didn’t have cannons as part of their armament?
In reading it seems like the range of the cannons were far superior to the multiple .50 caliber machine guns the P-51 carried and might put it at a disadvantage against some of the other competitors.

My father is. 97 years old and was on the USS Enterpiise in WW2. I just asked this question of him and he said unequivocally the Grumman F6F Hellcat. He used to work on them so he ought to know.”
