re: As a parent, what would you do? Cheerleading coach on video forcing girls into splits

I don't think I ever played a sport where a coach didn't do something that someone would call physical abuse.
I remember one day my swim coach made me swim a 1650 yard butterfly because I was a few minutes late to practice. I crawled out of the pool and threw up on the deck. I laid there more worn out than I had ever been. Coach kicked me in the chest then threw me in the pool and made me swim another one.
I loved that man.

I would just like to point out how fine that Denver news anchor was. Damn!

And like the other guy said, I can't believe in this day and age that they are allowing an adult male to coach young girls unsupervised. It sucks--especially for all the good male coaches out there--but that is just a dynamic that I'd want to avoid at all costs if I were an admin.
So it sucks that an adult male can coach young girls, but you then also say that there are good male coaches out there?
I don't see anything wrong with any gender coaching any other gender, as long as things are on the up and up and no line are crossed, obviously.
As for this story, I would assume this is how one learns/trains to do splits...keep pushing more and more each time until your body is used to it and it is normal. And as for people bitching about stretching and all of that, do we know that they didn't stretch her before doing this to her? Or is that just an assumption people are making? (asking honestly, because I read the article and didn't see anything mentioned unless I missed it)
I am no cheerleading expert, or a doctor for that matter...and I have no idea if this coach is an idiot or a terrible person...but I would assume that pushing your leg muscles past their points is a prerequisite for learning how to do a split. And hell, it even looked like he (and her teammates) were trying to keep her body straight/balanced and her form correct. That doesn't seem like something you would do if you were trying to hurt someone.

How do you train your body to do splits? I wanna learn
It shouldn't take long to be able to stretch enough to be able to do the splits, so this torture exercise that guy was putting those girls through was completely unnecessary and dangerous.

It wouldn't have taken me 8 fricking months. I understand cheerleaders having to do splits, but there is an extremely firm line between requiring them at tryouts/slowly working into it and just plopping someone down like that.

So fricking what? You have to do the splits to be cheerleader, either quit...or we'll help you. Yea it hurts, you don't have the will power to stretch like that on your own and suffer incremental pain...so quit or we'll show you what it takes. Get over it.
Yeah, no.
There's actual technique and training to get to the point of being limber enough for the splits. You don't just force them down, tearing muscle/ligaments in the process. That's like saying you should just throw bricks at a kid so he can get used to getting hit in football instead of running actual drills to acclimate him.

Again, is that what happened? For all we know, they stretched for 30 minutes before training for splits. Why is everybody assuming this dude just pushed this girl to the ground and started abusing her (in front of a camera and all of her teammates, mind you)..?

You stretch every day from many different angles. There is a little bit of pain as there is any time you stretch. But forcing it like this guy was to the point of extreme pain is completely unnecessary, and probably not as effective.

That grown man was a member of Team USA and a national champion at Louisville. He's also gay. If you're really worried about grown men coaching your daughter, don't put her in any sport then.

I'd go whip his national champion arse.

My girl would be smart enough and have enough self respect to never want to be a stupid cheerleader so I'll solve that on the front end

It wasn't that forced though, that girl was just a giant wimp. He barely pushed down on her, she was complaining while they weren't even doing anything.
Furthermore she is not freaking close to doing the splits. Honestly, he should have just cut her arse off the team considering those two things.

This actually happened with multiple girls.

So sad thinking about all those hymens that won't be broken the natural way.

It's amazing if you look at comments from this story on Facebook or wherever. It's all women saying she's a bad cheerleader and should be able to do it and saying she deserved the bullying she's received.
Women are terrible and that's why they should not be in charge

Personally I'm glad my cheer coach forced me to do the splits way back when.
However, if I had a problem with a teacher or coach I would not call the news or put it on queer social media outlets. I'd handle it myself, personally and privately.
If you can't meet the requirements for the sport you voluntarily signed up for, pick something else.

Maybe if the coach would have trained her properly, she would have been able to do splits by now. Instead, on the first week of their summer camp, the coach decided on the course of training that is seen in the video.

It's common sense that cheerleaders need to be able to do the freaking splits.
