I'm not joking, at all. Once the ball gets rolling it won't stop until all vestiges of "racist" culture are gone.

It was voted on by the city council.

Also, they're just statues. I don't give a shite.

Honestly I really couldn't care less about the monuments.

It's more about politicians and Mitch the bitch getting to do whatever the frick they want regardless of what the people are saying. Those monuments were irrelevant to anyone's feeling for 150 years, now there's a small group of snow flakes that they offend so Mitch decides to pander to those pussies? frick him and frick the city council.

I hope they all go down in flames over this

So the only thing (besides crime and dirt) that separates New Orleans from Columbus Ohio are four statues, got it.

I may not be onto the joke....

Today Columbus is a larger and far superior city to New Orleans for a lot of reasons.

Thanks for clarifying. For a minute I mistakenly thought New Orleans was the tourist mecca that drew 10 million visitors a year because of music, food, festivals etc. Now I know Columbus is the real tourist magnet with its renowned cultural attractions.

The city council voted that the monuments were a public nuisance, the mayor made the decision to take them down.

He also made the decision on how and what money and city resources he would steal from the city to do so.

I must have missed the public vote on the monuments.

Isn't Columbus three times the size of New Orleans, with about 5 Fortune 500 companies?

Really naive and short-sighted mindset to have.

I think it's pretty clear this is about the respective cultural identities of cities not their livability. Someone here said that the only thing separating New Orleans from a generic city, ie Columbus, were the statues (oh and dirtiness and crime), which is an absurd statement. No one is arguing New Orleans is some great economic hotspot for families to settle down in.

Street names will be next. Guaranteed.

I wouldn't doubt that. Changing street names will cause a storm of bad feelings. Changing street names is more than finding a new name.
Just think of the issues it will cause. Street signs, maps, postal issues, everyone on the street has to ditch all stationary, change websites, change addresses with all their friends, family, vendors and clients. All GPS units are suddenly lost. What a nightmare. That would be a huge mess. If they want mass protests this is the way to do it.
This event will be interesting to watch.

They could have every honky in the city wearing a placard that says "I'm sorry for being a horrible racist cracker" and it still wouldn't be enough. When you cede even the smallest concession to these types it is like blood in the water. All you do is attract more sharks who will tear everything apart.

Those "fricks" probably have more money than you or i... being as how NOLA boasts the most expensive real estate in the state

nobody is talking about the possible increase in the perception of NOLA after this... you might lose some white supremacists, but to a lot of young people, this is what they want their cities to do. This is indicative of looking towards the future.

I still think it's hilarious that people the are raising the most hell about this, don't live in the city. Why are y'all surprised that in a majority black city, they don't want Confederate monuments? If white people were so concerned about keeping everything the same, y'all shouldn't have fled to Jefferson Parish over the decades.

Probably because that's not real. No one is moving here or bringing a business here because of this.
