Because I don't like government providing something that should be provided by the private sector.

the Texas one is the perfectly placed quick piss stop on the drive from BR/NOLA to Houston.

They used to have lots of visitor info. I would always stop at them when traveling.
I-25 going north into Wyoming had a cool one.

Holiday Inn Express or Hampton Inn lobby bathrooms are tGOAT place to take a dump while travelling.

Sometimes a bathroom and a vending machine are all you need. I prefer to stop at rest stops because you can get on/off the road in about 30 seconds as opposed to 5 minutes each way for an average exit. Saves 10 minutes and over the course of a long trip, potentially up to 30

While I wouldn't be opposed to the idea, I'm not full-bore ANCAP to that level.
I do think there is substantial space for discussion between a rest stop and the fire department. There aren't really many examples of successful private fire departments, but there are thousands of successful private rest stops (ie truck stops)

Drove from Little Rock to Cleveland, OH recently and most times, they were damn near full on both sides of the interstate/highways

Rest stops would be 10x better if run by the tourism companies in the state.

take a piss, grab a snack and keep rolling without having to deal with crowds at gas stations/truck stops if you don't need fuel.

The LA. rest area at the LA-TX border is very nice, same for the one on the TX side of the border.
I've stopped at one in TX off I-45 that are nice.

I drive to Houston quite a bit and almost always stop at the Texas welcome center on I-10
same.
got into that habit when they were doing all that construction near Beaumont a several years ago.
blew right past the welcome center on my way to Baytown because I could easily make it Bayton before needing a bathroom.
then I-10 turned into an absolute parking lot. I sat there not moving at all for 2-1/2 hours with no where to get off the road while watching cranes fly beams across the road, etc.
I ended up having to get out and piss on the interstate
Sidenote: I also now keep a GPS set when traveling. even when taking the same route I've taken for years and can do it in my sleep.
Being automatically rerouted due to road closures, accidents, traffic, etc. is a freaking godsend!

If you are driving on 95 in the Northeast, you basically have no other option because you have to repay tolls to get on and off the highway. Also, you have to drive well off the highway to go to anything that isn't state run.
The ones on the New Jersey Turnpike are definitely funding the mafia
The ones in New York are shockingly new and nice.

I haven't stopped at a rest stop in a long time, but I'm glad they are there. Most seem to be in convenient places to stop, use the bathroom, walk the dogs and get back on the road conveniently.

Some states, Iowa being one, take immaculate care of their rest stops and they are definitely worth taking a pit stop at.
Most states they are fricked up and are no-go zones.

Not everything needs to be a crowded arse Bucees (while I enjoy it, the ones here are packed to the gills with people all day).
Sometimes folks just want to stop, use the restroom, stretch their legs in a place that has a little bit of security.

I have to assume from the downvotes that there are several ot gays hooking up at their local rest stops.

Democrats.
The idea of the State relinquishing control of anything causes mass panic among them.
