We take more than two long driving trips a year to visit family.

Gross.

Gas station bathrooms have always been worse on average in my experience when compared to rest areas.

remember seeing a passing reference to some organization like the "Interstate Exit Gas Station Operators Association" claiming how much money could be saved by letting that function be privatized. Which was of course served by those operators and their stinky hell-hole bathrooms.

Without them we would have only had Mike

Why you need a rest area at 1 in the morning if you got woods

Or bushes

Or tall grass

I remember getting the little fountain cokes at them also. Some of the ones in Florida had OJ as an option too. Me and my brother always collected the little brochures about places to visit in that state and it was reading material for part of the trip. Simpler times.

Negative Ghost Rider. There’s one East bound side of I-20. It’s a new building with great landscaping.

I remember back 30 years ago and I think there were 5 on l-20 in Louisiana. Both state lines, Dunn, choudrant, and one somewhere between Ruston and Shreveport. They are redoing the welcome center by Mississippi, so that leaves only the welcome center next to Texas and the choudrant rest area as only ones open. The Dunn ones has turned into a speed trap if heading to monroe. Richland sheriff officers set up there all day writing tickets.

I just don't understand why anyone would think this.....or ask the question. Damn things are always busy.

We travel a lot and very often stop at them. Get a map, maybe some brochures, stretch your legs, free your bladder, it's all good. Not all rest stops are well done, but if they are, it's a good way for a state to generate some positive vibes and advertise places you might want to stop at.

I only really drive across state lines in the south and still see them here.

No they are not obsolete. We stop at them all the time when traveling in the RV to stretch our legs, use the restrooms and get a bite to eat.

Yes, they should be operated by the state. There also should be more of them. Some states have a lot of them and some states don't have enough.

With the advent of the Internet, I say “Yes”.

Where is this? I remember there was one between Ruston and Monroe at one point, but it's been a good decade or so since I've been on that section of road.

Because I don't like government providing something that should be provided by the private sector.

I was on a road trip last month in rural Oklahoma. Went 2.5 hours on smaller roads with no bathroom/gas station/etc in sight. I almost pissed myself and couldn't believe how long you can drive with out a place to piss.

Yes states should operate them.

There are lots of good things about Utah. State run rest areas are not one of them.
