The first decade or so will be lucrative as the software and engineering are improved.

Then the automation will reduce accidents to almost zero.

I don't like this. I don't want to ride in some vehicle that I don't know who else has been in, every single time. I like keep stuff in my vehicle that I need regularly.

*I live in a less urban slightly rural area. However, If I lived back in an urban downtown area, this would be cool.

This is the OT's favorite topic in the list of things that won't be prevalent for another 50+ years.

As has been shown over the last few decades, revenue and spending are not dependent on each other

I can give you a million reasons why this isn't going to happen:

1. Americans love their independence, ability to jump in the car and go wherever whenever. By "go" I mean "drive." That ain't gonna change in 30 years.

2. New Orleans can't keep its streets free of potholes and flooding. What happens when the car hits a pothole and it throws off its remote control apparatus?

3. People by and large won't want this shite, and won't pay for it ... either individually, or, in tax dollars allocated to whatever infrastructure alterations will need to be made to support this.

4. Liability -- this would be a boon to PI attorneys. Computers can't be sued; people can; behind the computers and the automation are designers, manufacturers, operators. Our tort system isn't set up for the bizarre legal theories that would have to be created out of whole cloth.

5. Half the people in this country can't name their own state capitol, senator, etc., but are going to embrace this technology sea change and be able to master it? Nuh-uh.

6. What is the purpose of autonomous vehicles, who would want this? Would I sit in the car and have it drive me somewhere .... if so, why would I want that? Or do I sit home and it runs errands for me? Again, why would I want that, so I can sit on my couch and eat more and get fatter?

7. This isn't going to become legal (other than a few test programs and very controlled circumstances) unless legislators pass it ... and again, I don't perceive the will of the voters will be to do this. Plus, this is probably something that not only would have to be legislatively approved on a local and state level, but also on a national level. We can't get behind high speed rail, funding for infrastructure improvements, but there will be popular support for THIS? Not likely.

8. Queen wrote a song, "I'm in Love with My Car," in the 1970s. Is that that long ago?

9. Finally, Musk, and Tesla, can build a robot that can frick them in the arse, I would bet, but, again, will there be a popular demand for this?

Maybe 50 years from now, when there are more autonomous vehicles than not.
