I like driving and I think I'm in the top 1% of all drivers. 27 years - 0 at fault accidents. Hard pass until I get senile or I can let it drive me home after drinking

This is the #1 reason why people want self-driving cars, but will always be illegal. I promise you that the law will be the same whether its self-driving or not. If you're in the car behind the driver seat, you have to be sober. Autonomous or not.

Yeah I think so too because it has a manual override. So it's essentially less useful than Uber.

Absolutely. DUI/DWI Attorneys and City Municipal Courts among many others will keep these laws in place to stay in business. DUI's are huge money makers for municipal courts through diversion programs.

I think if anything they will only be busier with autonomous vehicles. Someone has to build them. Someone has to program them. Someone has to inspect them. And someone has to sell them.

Attorney is the most represented occupation among politicians. As long as this is the case, there will never be a drop in the need for attorneys.

Maybe but why would they care? If they make it Washington it's not like they'll ever need to do PI work unless they really want to.
At that point they got theirs. Doubt they really care if the morris bart's of the world go out of business.

This thread is also evidence that a lot of people still don't really "get" what comes with a society of autonomous cars.
Accidents will fall dramatically. Like it would be rare for a person to ever get into any accident.
The average person experiences 4 crashes in their lifetime. That number will be damn near 0 once autonomous cars become the norm.

In that context, sure. You'll have states like Alabama and Mississippi and Louisiana that hold on for dear life, but the vast majority of the country will continue to progress as technology allows.
