I think it's probably like every other profession. Some people love what they do, many hate what they do even if they're good at it.

I tried sales but sucked at it. It requires acting, even when you don't feel up to it. I'm not a good actor even under ideal circumstances.

Everyone has days where things just aren't clicking but in sales you have to fake it in those times or you don't produce.

Some personality types like sociopaths take to it like a duck to water because their entire persona is based on whatever they have to be to get what they want.

You can take advantage of them and even though you have no plans in buying from them, don't tell them that until you get a free lunch or tickets to a game, etc then tell them later you have decided to go with someone else, although it was never your decision to make.. But since they called you.. get what they are willing to give..

Oh.. But if everyone starts doing it, there is a good chance they will start calling your company and complaining about how the employees are taking advantage of them and then the company will then not allow anyone to receive anything from any salesmen.

I worked in 100% commission and could stay at the top even taking off many times a year for 7-10 days at a time. But it absolutely pissed off upper management because all they saw was how much more I could sell if I worked all the time. Even though the other top salespeople worked way more and we sold the same year end amounts. It was annoying

eta: they were also irritated that we worked out a deal where another guy would cover my clients while I was on vacation and I covered his while he fished bass tournaments

More than half of the posters on this board are involved in sales or “consulting”

You’re either in sales or working for sales.

Yeah. Sometimes management can't see the forest from the trees.

I've been lucky to only have 1 manager who thought yelling at sales reps was a good motivational tactic.

The best motivation is making money. There isn't a better one out there.

Tiered bonus/comp plans.
Trips/prizes.
Extra support staff.
There are tried and true motivational tactics for sales reps.
Any company that screws that up deserves what they get.

Also depends on what you're selling. First part to deal with is the customer's automatic assumption that you're a piece of shite and don't deserve to make money off them, before the conversion has even started. So they are only satisfied if they think they ran off with a steal and now can sleep at night because the salesman may as well had flipped burgers during the time they had to deal with said prick customer. Etc,etc.. Deal with that scenario alone on a daily basis and try to be a genuinely happy person.

I was in sales for 2 years selling security systems. Had big ideas, landed partnerships with much bigger companies than the 2 I was with in that time frame, but I could not convince myself I was doing the right thing. Getting out of sales improved my mental health immediately. I could do business to business sales, but selling to customers was where I had an issue. I can't stand feeling like I'm getting over on someone to make a buck. Too much shady shite goes on, too. They can keep that shite.

You were on 100% commission ? As someone who has been in sales for nearly my entire career- i can say with certainty that that company had zero right to be “irritated” by anything you did, since THEY WERE NOT PAYING YOU A SALARY.. or presumably even benefits for that matter.. if they made their “irritation” known to you, or tried to tell you what to do- then i 100% get why you left.. any company who gets irritated with me, or tries to tell me how im running my business while im footing the bill and they are only paying commission ?? Id tell them to go kick rocks .. matter of fact, without knowing more about the situation - it sounds like they were treading on pretty thin ice, legally speaking, since there are very strict rules about managing 1099 reps and what you can and cant expect of them .

Haha, you were the loser they knew was a dud and would respond with some douche bag comment about the product they are selling so they approached it that way.

Every person who cannot get in the truck and go generate business for his or her company is jealous of those of us who can. I can manage and have proven it but sales feeds the machine. I felt useless while babysitting the check takers, go earn a living being a great representation of what your company aspires to be instead of waiting on the sales team to fill the bank account so you can cash your check

I work a hybrid role, so salary and vehicle plus commission on sales. I don't have the pressure to sell, but have a unique opportunity to do so when people really need what I offer coupled with my expertise and repair plan.

Now the straight commission guys? Absolutely. At times I think they have no conscience.

Wait

You’re forced to grovel for my money in order to make your livelihood and you think I’m the loser?

You come to me. Not the other way around. I don’t fricking need you.
