They always seem to be miserable douchebags or the over the top fake happy types.

probably depends on what they're selling and how good they are at it.
I know a guy "in sales" although i dont' know wtf he sells, somethign with technology or something. That guy gets to travel all over, play fancy golf courses, take clients to vegas, it really seems like the guy is just paid to party professionally with potential clients and get paid 6 figures for it. I can assure you he isnt' dead inside.

I can sell ice to a freezing eskimo, but morals are a real bitch.

I’ve had a bunch of sales jobs. I’m good at it, but hate it. Some people, like my brother, love it. I recommend that everyone try outside sales, retail, and food service. The world would be a lot nicer.

Im not sure if they are dead inside.
I can't fathom being a salesperson. I'm sure there are some decent salesman out there that make it work, but most of the ones I've come across ooze insincerity. I am not sure how those guys keep at it, day in and day out. When I'm happy, you can tell. When I'm upset, you can tell. I don't know how they do it.
If you can do it, do what you gotta do to feed your family.

When you make a lot of money but they give you zero time off to enjoy it you do become dead I side.

There’s a difference between sales, maintenance, networking and business development

I know a couple of people whom you describe.
Both of them are so fake-happy that there is a sense of insincerity whenever I talk to either of them. Both of them happen to be salesmen.
It’s a career I could never do.

I don’t know that that qualifies as sales. Sounds more like he is in the business of maintaining existing clients.
Which if that is truly as you describe it, we’re in the wrong field

When I was about 20, I talked a much older coworker into buying a truck he couldn't afford just to prove to another coworker I could do it. I felt awful afterward and ended up quitting several jobs in sales later on because it was too easy and I always carried guilt for selling to people that I knew shouldn't be buying.

We all know you’re lying. Hamburgers aren’t that expensive.

Depends.
Some people sell terrible products that they know customers will hate as soon as they sign up, and their whole job is dancing around shortcomings or outright lying to get a sale. They're the guys who, once you sign, will dodge all the angry calls while you try to figure out how to cancel / get your money back.
Some people sell great products that individuals and businesses rely upon to be more successful in their own endeavors. Salesforce and Microsoft, for example, have salespeople. They have great networks with clients and enjoy their lives because it's a mutually beneficial transaction.
For example: Zillow once hit me up to sell their Premier Agent listing. Looked it up before the first call, all the agents hated it and called it a scam. Their business relies on people not knowing enough about the product before signing up. The people that work there are probably miserable.

Started doing Business Development for my Commercial Construction Business from Project Management. I can see how one would be dead inside, I rather do PM unless I start winning some work here soon.

Worked in sales for 3 years. Fake happy was constantly pushed. Made six figures each year and earned top numbers but I’d never go back. I was miserable. Drinking every single night. I make much much less now and I also work a shifty job but I’d never go back to sales.

What industry are you in? I don’t know if a single successful salesperson who falls into either category. Are you referencing cars salesman only?
