I know this falls into the whole "plant baw" thing, but I was talking to someone the other night and he was telling me his son started doing some type of instrumental class in HS. Once he graduated he had a job at a plant and they paid him to go to school.

Right now he goes to classes 2 days a week, gets paid $16/hr and the classes are included in his 40 hrs.

It seems like unless you are going to school to be a teacher, doctor, engineer, architect, lawyer, mass comm (media).. There are cheaper options out there to prepare you for a career.

Are their a lot more people attending college than really needs to?

What will the world do without blue haired majors in lesbian basket weaving to make our coffee?

Why do teachers need college anyway? Unless you want to teach college. As long as you get passed one grade higher than you want to teach they should let you go for it.

What an original query. I don’t think anyone has ever considered this. Let alone discussed it openly.

How cheap was it to prepare you for your career as a fluffer in the male porn industry?

Are high schools to blame? It seems like that is the goal of HS.. To prepare kids for college. Unless there are special programs at a HS, it seems like everyone else doesn't matter.

I can't answer this. I just know that you need a degree to become a teacher.

It's almost as if you had this weird ability to not notice one of the top 3 core OT topics that is universally agreed upon here in the last 10 years of your every single day posting

And of course you make a thread asking for the answer

Then don't read my threads/post. Problem solved.

Clean, off topic for a second.

I saw that Manning kid from Newman throw 3 TDs in their Spring game and the headline I saw said "Manning's nephew". Is that Archie Manning's nephew? Or Peyton & Eli's nephew?

Not the only professions that fall in this category, but yes, there are too many people going to college for no reason other than society says it's what you are supposed to do if you want to be successful.

It’s actually yes and no.

Let’s start with the reasons for NO.

For today’s graduating seniors, the majority of them will need some sort of post secondary certification/education in order to make more than $15 an hour. Which frankly is like bare minimum to move out of mom’s house.

Now the YES reasons are that these are careers that before would’ve been on the job training. So in theory, graduates should be qualified at entry level positions without having to take on extra debt just to get specific training for a specific field.

And of course there’s the whole- you’re a loser and dumb if you don’t go to college mentality. Which most high schools are getting away from now with different diploma tracks.

It’s a complex issue.

One caveat to this discussion is that we'd be better off if academia was pulling its weight too.

If the average liberal arts student left school having read classic literature, had a grasp on world and US history, studied languages, etc. - think about how much better our society would be.

Instead these kids leave infuriated about the world without having any actual knowledge of it.

Also, do we have more colleges than we really need? Yes, by a long shot.

Yes, most going for majors that wont pay back their loans in a hundred years. Unless youre going to be a Doctor or an engineer ect, go to a tech school and make it easier on yourself.
