Soon, maybe now, non-college degrees will pay more, and be in more demand, than college-educated professions.

Think plumbers, electricians, etc.

Then, the shine will be off the college degree turd.

Yes

This has been obvious for a very long time.

Why can't someone open a lesbian basketweaving factory to employ these people? they could sell the baskets on etsy. Really shows you the failure of capitalism

This is already true. HVAC techs, welders, etc.

But it’s hard work and long days. Not a lot of our young men and women are interested in that.

It just depends on your degree. If you’re getting a useless degree in gender studies and paying $10,000+ per semester for college then you are an idiot because there is no chance in hell you’d be able to pay your dept back. Those are the people who want socialism in this country so that others can pay for them to make a stupid mistake and get a degree in something that is just completely useless.

When I was coming up, there wasn’t such an abundance of kids going off to college. There seemed to be a more equalized distribution of college/trades but schools and parents pushed college more. There was also a larger disparity in income potential between college graduates and trades people. Now, there is a severe shortage for the trades (with a more even income range) and an over abundance of college grads to the point that even grad schools are growing exponentially.

I told my son he can study anything he wants in college, but if it's not a marketable program, he better plan on double majoring.

We've all known the answer to this for a long time. You should've asked "Why do too many people go?". Hell, that's pretty obvious as well. It's all about GTFO.

I went to HS on the WANK, all my teachers ever said you gotta goto college, it ain't even a choice. How many universities are there in Marrero? Read between the lines, they don't care about career progression, they just wanted us to GTFO!

Parents don't care if their kids become astronauts, astrologers or assholes, they know if their kids enroll, they'll GTFO!

Did I _need_ to graduate from college? Of course, not! But what else was I going to do with my GI Bill?

Yes.

Big Education has made many people rich while insulating the results of their frickery from reality.

Since this industry is run by the Progressive left, nothing will change.

In fact, it will only get worse if a socialist is elected and "pays off all student loan debt".

The first responsibility of a society is to keep its citizens safe. The military, police, fire departments and health departments do this well.

The second most important responsibility is to educate the people. That’s why we have public schools that provide general knowledge over a 12-year period. After that, further education is elective.

Regrettably, the idea that general knowledge is preferable persists well into a college curriculum. I think public funding of education should be extended to 14 years with the extra two years focused upon life skills and specialty training.

Four-year colleges could easily adapt their programs to accommodate those who want a two-year specialty degree and those who desire the traditional 4-year+ programs. Their graduation rates would soar.

And we're failing at that. There are some dumbasses in college.

Fair point.

Yes. But the issue isn’t just college alone. Lots of jobs out there that didn’t require a degree 20 years ago that now require one for absolutely no good reason.

I’ve seen administrative assistant jobs require associates degrees at minimum. It’s ridiculous.

I've learned much more by reading than I ever did in school.
