re: Are libraries a waste of money today?

You can tell who uses the libraries in this thread, and who does not. As already stated, modern libraries provide so much more than physical books. It's also a great resource for kids or even adults who don't know how to do research. If you are an avid reader, it costs a small fortune if you have to pay for everything you read. There are also a lot of books that don't display well digitally. If this is considered government waste, then I suggest you look a little more closely at other government entities.

If you need a clean bathroom, look no further.
Also, they have digital streaming services that are really good.
They are a massive boon to the unemployed, directing them to resources.
Cheap printing.
Great for researching genealogy.
Superb places for social activities . . . "story hour" aside.

We go to the library once a week to check out books for my kids. They love it. Two of the libraries close to us have good events quite often. My son went to a presentation by a zoologist today who brought a bunch of live animals. My wife said there were only three kids though.
I check out books quite a bit but I’d rather purchase them. I wouldn’t check them out at all if my kids weren’t going.

tOT: Idiocracy is here. Western society is crumbling. We are all doomed.
Also tOT: Why should libraries exist?

I still like to be able to walk in and browse the selections of books and other materials. Although I have a kindle and access to the Library’s books through an app on my iPad, it’s still fun to visit the local Library. The one I visit is very nice and very well stocked.

Of all things the gov wastes money on and you want to cut libraries?
Posted on 7/28/21 at 4:43 pm to bdavids09
I use mine often but they probably are a huge drag on local governments.

No, probably one of the best uses of tax money. I go about once a week, and have forever. It’s a great place to work for those that don’t go to a office, or have too many distractions at home. I also usually read several major newspapers while I am there. There is something about the printed page that is just better than a screen, and you don’t have a paywall. Also relying on internet search engines for information leaves you with biased information, or because of companies using search engine optimization services never finding the information you need. I would rather plow through books, and published reports.

Be glad that the government is still stockpiling information somewhere about the world we increasingly used to know.

I wonder what’s the percentage overlap of people who think libraries are a waste and people who think FDL makes good pizza…
I bet it would be substantial
