Seems to me they'd be better spent being converted to homeless shelters along with offices where homeless can get ID's, birth certificates etc...

I can think of many, many things that are bigger wastes of taxpayer money than libraries

Wherever you stand politically, unless you're a book-burner librarians have got your back. Nobody fights harder (or more quietly) for freedom to communicate.

No. It’s a wonderful public space which provide amazing, essential services. Providing spaces to read, study, or use how you see fit without having to pay to be there is rare now, and I don’t see a reason to get rid of them at all. It’s the last real public space, and is always super busy where I live.

What people should do is to take back more of the public space that was privatized for no good reason. One example is database access, where most information has been paywalled despite the fact that the public has often already paid for the research to be conducted. The paywall is often circumvented too by asking the authors directly for a copy, which most are happy to provide.

That's exactly what we need to do, take away one of the only options for poor or underprivileged kids to access books.

My wife and kids use it at least 1x a week. They are great if you use it.

When was the last time you went to a library and looked at the things and events they do?

Libraries do way more than offer book checkouts these days. They function as a public computer cafe, also to print out stuff for people who don't have printers. You can also check out movies and music, as well as various equipment (varies from branch to branch). There are also events like book readings and some clubs use them for gatherings (Baton Rouge Chess Club uses the Jones Creek library for instance). And I may be showing my age, but physical books are better than e-books. Libraries also stock tax forms for people who do manual taxes instead of online services. Plus they usually have archives of old magazines and newspapers, especially local ones, that are hard to find online. I'm sure there's other things I'm not listing here as well.

I personally don't think it's a waste of money at all.

Sooner or later, "they" will find a way to burn them using no fire whatsoever.

Libraries are critical public services. My nanny took both of my children to the library several times per week.

Clearly someone doesn't have kids.

Libraries aren't just about physical books anymore, baw.

Most all of them have pivoted to most selections being offered digitally online, one of the best being Army's library via the Overdrive app. You can get more audiobooks than you could ever listen to from them.

Libraries, or the good ones not overrun with homeless, have also become meeting places for all sorts of groups and hobbies.

Then, there are the programs offered to the community, particularly children. If you have children and haven't checked out what is offered to them by your public library, you're missing out.

Libraries are actually one of very few taxpayer-funded amenities that are actually somewhat useful.
