Wake, yes.

Funeral? It would have to be a unique situation.

Where I live in Oklahoma, everyone wears jeans to everything.

I was raised to dress to show respect, so I would never do it but I guess I am used to others doing it.

Depends on the family you’re dealing with. My family doesn’t care personally, but I’ve been to funerals where you knew it wouldn’t be acceptable before even attending.

Yes, as long as you wear a Bobby Labonte or a Raise Hell, Praise Dale t-shirt with it. Also bring a 2 liter of Mountain Dew as an offering to the family.

No jeans and boots would be ok. Also, will there be food at this wake? 2nd part of this. Can I come to the wake?

In Harlan County KY - yes without a doubt. Folks wear whatever clothes they have. Had an uncle who wore a hawaiian shirt to his own mothers funeral. That's what he had. I had slacks, dress shirt, dress shoes, no tie, and was overdressed.

You sound snooty. Look, if it's an immediate family member, yes, you dress up. You took off work, you arrived when the wake started and you will stay until it ends, nicely dressed. If you are a friend of the family and you stop by to pay your respects on your way home from work, it is perfectly acceptable to not be nicely dressed. The family doesn't give a frick. I know I didn't care. I was just happy to see all of my dad's friends.

Now the funeral? If you are close enough to the family to also attend the funeral, then yes, you should take off work, or bring nice clothes to change into before you leave work. But not the wake man. Lighten up.

I would not do it because I feel like dressing a bit nicer (at LEAST dress pants and a coat/blazer) is a sign of respect to the deceased's family. But I also think the deceased's family would appreciate it more if you showed up in jeans to pay your respects rather than just not showing at all because you couldn't or didn't want to dress nicely.

Males above the age of 12 should never go a wake in anything other than a suit, preferably a dark suit.

Have some class.

And the fact that you remember that the Uncle wore a Hawaiian shirt tells me that you shouldn’t wear a Hawaiian shirt. Same with jeans, examples given were memories.

In other words just don’t. I would choose a suit. At least put on a pair of dark dress pants with belt, a button down, and real shoes and Sport Coat.
