So in your world, anyone who works in a government building or makes frequent business trips to one should not be able to keep a gun in their car for the time they spend out of the office?

Your buddy is a tard.

He could say the same thing about home robberies.

"Well, if the gun wasn't there to be stolen...."

I hate a fricking thief. The fricking car vandal is who is responsible, not the car owner.

I keep my golf clubs in my car. It's not a problem until some jackleg breaks in to my car, steals my clubs, and beats someone with them.

How is that going to protect me when I’m not at my house? I have to frequent government buildings for work. I can’t carry a firearm there. So because someone might break into my car and steal my gun I should just sacrifice my personal protection. Good call

gun owners who leave their pistols in their vehicles are partially responsible for gun violence in america

No, but it does make them irresponsible gun owners.

I wouldn’t say that. I have to go to federal court in New Orleans in October and I am not going down without a gun in my truck. But at the same time I very well can’t carry into the court house. No other choice than to leave it locked in my truck.

38% in my parish… this is from the Sheriff’s data back in June:
Since the beginning of 2022, there were 34 reported vehicle burglaries, and in 20 such instances the vehicle in question was unlocked. The burglaries have resulted in guns being stolen 13 times, with 9 thefts happening with unlocked vehicles.

If its 25% that's just another gun. Look, I don't care what it is, if there is a demand there will be supply. It doesn't matter if its legal or not.

As a gun owner it’s your responsibility to secure it.

There are lockboxes you can buy that should secure your weapon enough to not have it stolen by a smash and grab thief.

I agree.

But the reality is, there are a lot of irresponsible people unfortunately and they leave their gun in their unlocked vehicle. So I am sure if people would just lock their vehicle that would help those numbers drop.

However I do leave a box of 9mm with 4 triple charged black powder rounds in my console in case someone decides to break in. If they shoot one their hand is gone.

So if the thief uses your gun and ammo he'll blow his own hand off?

That's brilliant.

I really meant overnight. I wasn’t thinking about encountering fun free zones when I made my comment. That’s a legit reason for leaving a gun in a vehicle.

Not at all. If you want to leave your gun in the car, knock yourself out. I just think it's dumb. To easy to break into a vehicle.

The simple fact is that the majority of stolen firearms are taken from vehicle burglaries. This is putting more guns on the streets, driving up statistics and making the case for the gun grabbers stronger.

I don’t want to see guns stolen, and I like to believe that everyone on this board feels the same way. People might disagree on who bears the responsibility, but I hope we can all agree that guns in the hands of criminals is bad.

With that being said, it is your right to carry a firearm and have a firearm in your vehicle. A simple solution to this would be to eliminate gun free zones and eliminate permit requirements to carry, but we all know that’s not going to happen everywhere.

As responsible gun owners, we shouldn’t make it any easier for criminals to get guns. A secure safe concealed within the vehicle is the best option for vehicle storage, although still not bulletproof. If you can’t afford that, most consoles or glove boxes lock. They’re even easier to break into, but better than nothing. If you don’t have that option, at least hide your gun and make sure the doors are locked.

Having to store your gun in your car during the day to go into a gun free zone is ok. The likelihood of a vehicle burglary during the day is much lower than at night, but it’s better if you can make it more secure. You also need to be aware of what kind of area you’re leaving it in. I’ve had a buddy have his entire truck stolen out of a hotel parking lot in broad daylight. shite happens.

In my opinion there’s no excuse to willfully leave a firearm in a vehicle overnight. Even if it’s in a “secure” bolted down lock box, a little time and the right tools won’t prevent a theft.

Gun owners should not be held responsible for theft, but it doesn’t mean you should be careless with firearm storage.
