The city I live in has specifically designed street sweepers just for the bike lanes. It’s pretty cool to watch them go to work

Same here, they use them on the sidewalks too. Pretty neat to see.

Both. In some cases there is a real demand for them, and in other cases (Severn Ave in Metairie) no one wanted it but to get federal money they had to install them.

Like vegans, being insufferable douchebags has a price. I saw one on the side of the highway this week, furiously pumping air into his front tire. Made my morning commute just a little bit better.

The addition of bikes lanes really isn’t about biking in general. City planners are realizing that the current neighborhood setup as it existed for the last 50-60 years is not working anymore.

Now, the new focus is on smaller suburb footprints with multi-use paths to get people from their neighborhood to shopping/retail.

The auto-driven society that built America is no-longer sustainable.

I am all for it.

When Jefferson Parish updated Severn by Lakeside, they were forced to put in those fricked up bike lanes to get federal funding. I’ve never seen one biker on it..

Algiers forced city council into removing some bike lanes there. I thought that was awesome.

It is invention the mother of necessity?

I have seen more cars driving in bike lanes than people on bikes.

The problem is… cities like BR widen the shoulder, put some paint down and call it a bike lane.

It’s a death trap. What’s the difference between that and a regular old shoulder? Paint. That’s it. Someone looking at their cell phone while driving will take you out. And it won’t take them long to do it, either.

There is a big difference between a “bike lane” and a protected bike lane. If there isn’t a barrier between the road and the bike lane beside it… it’s just bullshite. A “bike lane” in name only.

They built a shite load of them in Austin, taking away driving lanes and dedicating them for bikes or buses only. Generally they’re just used by electric scooters.

The big problem many of these places have is it's so sporadic that it's not that useful. Yeah Government st has it, but what about getting back and forth to Government st to use them?

That was because they gamed the system for grant money. …also the reason they just painted a couple green lines down a bunch of downtown BR streets and labeled them green bike paths.

That's extra roadway that could be utilized for drunks and people texting and driving.

^^^this would be a better use of the pavement. We have a texting while driving epidemic.

Plus, in fat@ss America, we don’t benefit from sidewalks and rarely frequent bike lanes since both rely on physical exertion when properly used.

Yep. The sidewalks, bike lanes, and Greenbelt here in Boise are full of kids on Lime scooters and/or electric motos going 30mph and running over pets and old people.

That's why I stick to the singletrack. Mountain biking is more fun anyway.
