re: Appealing grade in English at LSU

Yes. Participation is 15% of your grade, attendance is considered a part of participation. So if you don't show up, your participation grade goes down. Then if you miss more than 3 classes, your final grade is lowered half a letter grade for each ensuing class you miss. So not only is your participation being lowered, but your final grade is being lowered simultaneously as well.
Assignments count as 85% of your grade- I made an A on that part.

He went from a 90 to a C+ due to missed quizzes (basically an attendance check) and then the teacher doubled down with the ridiculous attendance policy. Op chose a shitty class.
Yep. Check reviews next time and see if attendance is a deal breaker.
OP probably wont have to worry about the F on the transcript because he will have to take it again. It will just be noted that it was repeated.

Plagiarizing himself? How the hell does that work? I always used my old papers in English classes

You aren't making a case for yourself. You are making it worse. The easiest part of college is simply showing up. It was worth a ton in this class and yet here you are complaining because you were too dumb to take advantage.
You should probably just drop out.

It sounds like the instructor taught you something in addition to English.
Rules do apply to you, mama's special little guy. Now take your F like a man.

Pay them again to take it.

Ask yourself this... if when you are out of college and interviewing, and an employer asks you about this F, would you be comfortable telling him/her you failed simply because of your lack of attendance?

Go to class or fail. How hard is that?
Posted on 5/9/18 at 9:10 am to fightingtigers98
The argument that "attendance policies make it hard for non-traditional students" is specious. I've taught classes where all the students were non-traditional. I didn't have an attendance policy because I did not need one. They were paying for their classes and they attended class.

I've heard of it happening before. Reusing assignments, and it's more likely to get caught nowadays because of the turnitin type databases. Guess it depends on how much of a dick a teacher wants to be.

It was 12 classes that I skipped. So just around 1/4th of them.

but I failed my english based purely on attendance.
You should've fricking shown up then. It's not like you don't know attendance is part of the grade from syllabus week.

I’ll say this, the policy is ridiculous and the teacher should be challenged and reported for that policy alone. Taking away portions of letter grades over attendance is flat out wrong.
But on the other hand, you show up for things you commit to. Your job, family obligations, and yes, even college classes. In a strange way his class holds one accountable for being where you need to be on time, much like the real world does.
I’d appeal on the grounds that this policy is unfair. No harm in trying especially since you had an A average before the attendance portion was weighed in.

Point of class-Learn the material. Result-learned the material.
If a teacher has some belief that their purpose is to teach you the ability to follow arbitrary instructions that actually have no reflection on your ability to understand the material, then that's on them. When a teacher in a different section decides that they don't take attendance and can give the same credit for the same class, then attendance is obviously not in any way part of the necessary curriculum for that course. So why should any one teacher be able to use it as a reasoning for stopping a student from moving forward.
You "sometimes you just have to show up people" are going to get stuck in 8-5 jobs doing meaningless BS all day. I am now in a career where I leave at 2 if I don't have anything to do. And just like in college, I take advantage of it. But when I need to take care of business, I get my shite done whether it be during working hours or at 2 a.m. (I have no control over when I get calls). It's worked well for me.

LSU doesn’t “erase and replace” like some schools—or at least they didn’t when I was there. You retake the class and both grades show up on the transcript and are averaged into the GPA.

Well that sucks then.

The teacher is aware of his own uselessness and has an attendance policy to justify drawing a paycheck in spite of it. But you’re still screwed.
