I had a Schizophrenic two doors down when I was a kid. He still lives there. He always walked around the neighborhood and looked creepy and told wild stories. All the kids knew him, and as we got older we messed with him (unfortunately). My mom called him the friendly neighborhood bum, but my Dad would give us a life lesson every time we saw him from the car. He used him as an example to lecture us about the consequences of doing drugs and what it does to your mind.
It worked. To this day I have never used illegal substances, even after dad admitted a decade later that he was just schizophrenic.

We lived across the street from a crazy guy who had an antenna on his roof to talk with aliens. One day a constable came by to serve some papers and the crazy dude shot and wounded him. Police came, stand-off ensued and he was arrested. When the cleaned out the house, among lots of weird stuff, he had jars and jars full of his toenail and fingernail clippings that he had saved.
