I lived in BR and never had a gun. My place was broken into but only because my roommate was a fricktard and left the front window open. I was smart enough not to have anything of value in plain sight. He on the other hand got what he deserved. Live and learn. Baton Rouge is a shite hole

Everybody keeps saying get a gun but it appears from his post he wasn't home so that wouldn't have helped.

You can find self Install alarms and cameras easily on amazon, but a large nasty dog can't be beat. Not only will it keep unsavory types at bay but door to door sales types tend to think twice.

Sleep naked. Nobody wants to fight a naked man.

Bingo. I love guns but they can't do shite if you're not home. Most of these guys will knock first to see if anyone's home and if they hear barking they will move on.
My door was kicked in a few years back, and they didn't take a thing after they found out two full grown labs lived there. The door was slammed shut so hard behind them it was wedged in the broken door frame.

OP, you can try Simplisafe or a host of other wireless alarms. Systems are monitored so you'll have that going for you.

Get a video monitoring system. Seriously. There have been several cases recently where the suspect was caught clearly on camera and led to arrests. They are cheap enough these days that there is no real reason not to.
I use Blink Cameras for my house. 1080P video that has motion activation and it's legit wireless. The motion activation causes the camera to record 10 second clips and it has a built in illuminating light for nighttime. The batteries in each module last about a year before needing to be recharged or replaced and you can add up to 10 cameras.
Just claim whatever was stolen on your renters insurance and move on.
My car was broken into in college at my apt complex and $1,100 worth of stuff was taken. Shitty feeling.

Sorry to hear this.
As an apartment dweller, dogs really aren't a viable option (and there is the care for them as well).
However, I will say that I have 2 large labs that love to bark at anything that walks up to the house. They are indoors most of the day. Even after a year of almost daily deliveries, the UPS and FedEx guys are still a little intimidated

The location to LSU was one of my reasons of getting it but whoever told me the Garden District was safer was bull of BS

The reason everyone is saying "buy a gun" is due to one fact...
We all hope you have a great alarm system, maybe a dog.. Maybe a child proof handle on your door.. And we all hope that only material possessions are threatened.
But we all also hope that you are given a chance to plug a bullet in the skull of some piece of shite trying to take what is yours.
The laws greatly protect a person defending his or her own home.. ..
As we have all seen in many.. Many recent posts , our judicial system is slow and too many are given 4th chances...
So... Protect your stuff...
I just so happen to have a close and personal interest in this post because I was involved with the rapist a month ago in the garden district and had to watch the horrible discomfort and pain that waste of tax money caused.
If he would have been shot within one house , the eventual victim of the second would have never happened. I'm just sick of it.. Sorry for the ramble.

Was it a black who did it?

I should've been more careful in choosing where to live. Location and price were good, but I knew it wasn't exactly safe haven either. Since I just spent hundreds moving into the place, I think one of the alarm systems would be my best bet. It could've prevented this, and had I had a gun there it would have surely walked.
Baton Rouge sucks

I would bet on that. I watch the local news and see all the shite that goes on

What is the ratio of blacks living in your area?
Posted on 6/30/16 at 1:14 am to Bushmaster
Arrests made in the BR Garden District 6 months ago.
Posted on 6/30/16 at 1:17 am to Breauxsif
But the garden district is so hip and trendy. What the hell?

You notice the "alleged felon" being cuffed? I think that answers your question
