Apparently, the new thing is for thieves to go around and hijack the signal cominy from your 'keyless' entry key fob then boost that signal to steal your car.

The recommendation is to buy a faraday cage/bag and store your keys inside.

Anyone on here doing that?

My key and fob already take up too much space in my pocket. I'm not bagging it before sticking it in my pocket.

It’s more for people that keep their keys on a hanger or on a table near a door next to the driveway. Amplifier could boost the signal enough to allow them to unlock and rummage.

I keep a spare in my truck, so they’d have to find the pouch to be able to start the truck and drive off

Why would a spare in your truck do this?

if your car doesn’t have keyless/remote starting capabilities the key FOB is pointless. there’s no difference between a push start and going through the obviously excruciating task of turning your key half an inch to start up

Isn't it more about keyless entry than remote start?

And then at that point it might as well use proximity to not need a key, period. That way the key never leaves my pocket.

Explain to the folks at home what exactly that means.

Sounds like fancy language to sell a pouch. Like that guy on TV selling a tactical sun visor for your car.

I'm not sure if I'm crazy or naive for not owning one of these things now that it appears cars are getting lifted/compromised pretty often.

Lol, there's more guys on TD that leave their keys in their trucks/ in their ignition than there are that would use this pouch.

The real answer here is to not leave shite someone would want to steal in your car.

Does this happen before or after they copy your garage door opener signal too?

If you have a remote that you use to unlock your car doors or start your engine, and you store it in a Faraday cage, the remote is useless while it's stored there.

If you take the device out of the Faraday cage to use it, the signal can be intercepted by a thief. The only way the Faraday cage is useful is if you never remove the remote from it to use it, and you can do the same thing with a cardboard box.

The Faraday cages are useless for this purpose. The solution is to never use the remotes.

I’m here. It’s never occurred to me to worry about this. Benefit of driving a car nobody wants to steal, I guess.

Unless it's a proximity key that you never even have to touch

Key fob hangs on hook in house. Thief uses a device to mimic its signal (from outside the house) to make car think key fob is right next to car. Car unlocks and starts (with start button) because it thinks key is inside. Car drives away because they are not designed to auto shut off if key fob is not detected in car after starting. Thief just has to leave it running at this point and go wherever he wants.

This isn’t about making a “copy” while it sits in your pocket.
