I went to a wedding in Southern Illinois two weeks ago. My 13 year old commented on how "different" it was. He said the people were nicer, more laid back and so on. Nobody locked their cars, they'd be parked at the gas station with the windows down while folks went in to grab something.

On top of that, everything was cheaper. Prices were 10 to 15% less on everything but gas.

Louisiana is like an abusive husband. This place honestly sucks. Everything is expensive, real estate, insurance, sales taxes, etc. Let's not forget what those high taxes get you, insane amounts of crime, horrible roads, bad public schools and shocking mismanagement at every level of government.

But wait... we have good food? Not much of a trade off.

I told her I would push the issue of crime continues. Now that we have a child she is seeing more things. The recent BR shooting had her asking a lot of questions of what to do if she finds herself in certain situations. I love being close to family and I do love Louisiana for it’s friends, family, food atmosphere but at some point quality of life has to be looked at.

Miami I can see being that way but the rest of the state is not like that.

If you are just trying to get away from violence in general, just get out of most any city greater than 250k.
Heck, you can still live in the distant suburbs of any of those cities and be just fine.

I'm probably 30-45 minutes drive from downtown Birmingham, even closer to some of the worst areas, yet I'm so rural I barely get cell service, the nearest gas station is at least a 5 minute drive, nearest grocery store or restaurant is even further away. I could probably leave my doors unlocked all the time and never have anything to worry about.

You don't have to go far to find peace and solitude.

Nope. I’d never leave the south. I did leave BR 17 years ago and would never move back. And NOLA is 100% out of the question.

I actually enjoy most of Louisiana, just not those shite holes.

There is no way that I’d still be in Louisiana. But the south in general? I’m staying. I am in the state and city that is the best for my and my wife’s job (nursing) to move makes no sense.

Houston is a case study study of gentrification. 20 years ago everyone flocked to the burbs. I was one of those people. 5-10 years later they rebuild areas like Midtown, Montrose, The Heights with success. But……. Crime is soaring like everywhere and concentrating in cities. Houston is crazy and police response times are awful. Basically they are going to piss away the gains that they’ve made.

Have to find a small country that's below the radar.

You think crime isn’t bad in northern cities? It’s
Not a north v south issue. It’s a shithole v. Nonshithole issue. And BR has become a shithole thanks to gerrymandering voting districts.

Mandeville is fine. Hence everybody trying to move here and housing prices skyrocketing.

The south isn’t the problem. Just move out of densely populated areas

You and everyone else. I travel a lot for work and the amount of places / cities that you can tell are beginning their decline is crazy. There will eventually be nowhere to run because these liberal progressives are like parasites. They move from one place to the next and can’t figure out why everywhere they go is ruined.

That’s everywhere though. Just have to find a small town that is good enough to live in

Good luck with that plan. Florida is full and even if it weren’t you probably can’t afford to live there.

We’re pretty content here in Lafayette, but I’d move to Montana in a heartbeat if my wife was on board.
