3.4 T hree days before the accident, the Louisiana House approved HB194. Under the bill, children 6 and under would be prohibited from riding in the back of pickup trucks and utility vans. The bill is being considered by the state Senate.

The bill's author, Rep. Quentin Dastugue, R-Metairie, said the impetus for the bill was an accident in east New Orleans in which three small children were hurled from the back of a pickup truck. One of the toddlers was killed; the other two were badly injured.

Dastugue said the bill's age limit was set at 6 and under to correspond with the age that children must be placed in child-restraint seats.

Efforts by legislators to raise the age limit to 12 or 18 met stiff resistance.

"If you are old enough to get a license to drive an automobile, you ought to have more sense that to climb into the back of a pickup," Dastugue said.

Representatives from rural areas, like James David Cain, D-Dry Creek, did not favor passing any type of legislation.

Cain said he knows many rural families whose only means of transportation is a pickup truck. He said families often drive 10 miles or more to church each Sunday, and it would be unfair to force them to make two trips.

Dastugue and Cain agree on one point. As Dastugue put it:

"You can pass all the laws in the world, but individuals still do stupid things all the time."

About 30 hours after the accident, Officer Dyess was stopped at a traffic light at the bottom of the Interstate 12 exit ramp at Sherwood Forest.

As he waited for the light to change, a low-riding red pickup truck sped by. Dyess estimated the truck was traveling about 45 or 50 mph in a 35-mph zone. Two teen-age boys were in the cab. Three other teens were riding in the truck bed.

"I was a little infuriated, a little upset," Dyess said. "I was sure every kid in Baton Rouge had heard about" the Drusilla Lane accident.

The officer pulled over the truck and asked the driver:

"Did you hear about the kids on Drusilla Lane?"

The driver responded that he did know of the wreck.

"Do you think it's a shame?" the officer asked.

"Yes, I do," the teen-ager replied. "I guess I'm just stupid."

"I don't know if you're stupid or not," Dyess said.

The officer did not write the driver a ticket because he was unable to clock how fast the truck was going. He did order the three teens in the truck bed to climb out and find another ride home.

"I went home with a peace of mind, that these kids were going to get home safely," Dyess said. "... If I didn't do anything, I wouldn't have slept that night."

Coming of age years for sure....really enjoyed those summer nights at Forest Park and the early Saturday morning games in the fall. Seems like they had us play football everywhere....Memorial Stadium, Olympia Stadium, Woodlawn HS and Southeast Middle School, etc..

I remember I was in PCB when it happened. I was about 20 years old. Place was full of Louisiana/BR people. Well, word got down to PCB about the accident and lots of people were bummed. Lots of people knew the kids who got killed.

One guy heard about it, he knew everyone involved and was completely, utterly intoxicated and inconsolable. I didn't even know the guy, but it took me and a couple of my friends to keep him from getting in his car and driving the 6 hours back to BR to kill guy who caused the wreck.

Haven't read through 5 pages, but I think one of the drivers' names was Henry Lin.

ETA: Reading back through the thread, I had forgotten that I had gone to H.S. with the 19 year old, Mark Eirick.

Dammit. Now I'm angry all over again.

I believe that one was in '94. It was where the father killed his wife and daughter at their beauty salon and then he killed himself. I don't remember anything other incident like that on Greenwell Springs.

When I came to LSU in 81, I quickly learned the young people in BR were country (compared to the NOLA area) and drove like they thought they were the Duke Brothers of Hazard County.
No disrespect to the deceased intended, RIP.

I was only 4 at the time but I just asked my dad about it. He was a firefighter for St George working at station 62 in those days. They were the first truck on the scene. He says it was an awful sight. One of the girls had hit a fence and he says she looked like cheese that had gone thru a cheese grater.

Dad told us about this Drusilla Ln incident as well as one that I guess happened around the same time when two cars on Nicholson played chicken with about 6 teenagers in each vehicle and they hit head on at about 75 mph. They had to physically scrape some of the bodies of Nicholson with shovels. Maybe some of y’all have the details to that wreck as well.

No doubt. Really miss those carefree days (and nights). Still remember the New Generation team and how it was made up of all future Broadmoor and Catholic standouts. Their coach (John Fred Gourrier) wasn’t so bad himself. Forgot to mention that the summer I played for Bonfanti, Brad Garafola was on the team with me. He pitched and was erratic but he threw gas. I still cringe when I think about what happened to him and the other officers in 2016. Very sad.

Doctors had predicted that Mark Eirick would die young, although not as a result of an accident. Eirick, 19, had diabetes and he sometimes refused to take his insulin shots or adhere to a strict diet.

This was the first thing I remembered about Mark. The day after he was diagnosed we were all sitting around talking about how Mark isn't going to be able to stick to a diet.

my dad was one of the cops that covered that wreck

I saw photos from the scene - very haunting and disturbing

ETA: driver was DRUNK and flying in the truck - hit a tree and the truck slingshot the kids in the back of the truck all over the place

Driver survived with minimal injuries and walked because of a local activist judge if I recall (some proto-PC crap involved iirc - maybe someone was Korean or something?)

My dad kept the pictures for at least 25 years in his car as a reminder

You could tell in elementary and middle school that Bucky Richardson was better than the rest of us.

Everytime I would see him I would hum "Judy in disguise" he would always get a kick out of it. Never played on one of his teams but always played against. Especially American legion then against some of the Catholic high summer league teams that he helped out on

That accident sounds horrific. I see some of you guys knew the people involved. Where did Henry Lin end up in life?

My thoughts exactly.
