Jim Donelon said this is a pathetic attempt by Piyush to fill the state's budget gap.

We got a letter for a vehicle that we traded in to a dealership in 2014. Apparently the dealership didn't turn in the plate like they said they would. Has anyone been able to get the fine wiped for a trade in and what information did you provide?

Don't be surprised that after all this mess settles, the dealerships will no longer turn in your plates on trade-in. I'm sure they're getting hit hard trying to settle some of these issues for their customers.

Call your dealership and send them
Copy of your letter. They will mail DMV a copy of bill of sale proving you no longer own the car (at least mine did)

FYI to everyone, you can cancel your own plates through the OMV website, whether it's a private party sale, a trade in or you're withdrawing the car from use on public roads and keeping/storing it. You don't have to turn the actual plates or depend on a dealer to do it. Plus you can save your confirmation for future reference, to address the OMV's own IT failings that generate letters like the recent mailing.

I have tried to call them numerous times today and keep getting the "Unable to accept your call at this time" message and I certainly don't want to take time off of work to sit in the DMV for a mistake they made.
It amazes me that someone would not think that sending out 1.2 million letters at one time and giving only a 60 day time frame to refute the issue was a good idea.
If only HALF the people that received letters called in, that would be an additional 8 thousand calls a day coming into the call centers.
Once again, a well thought out plan by the state of Louisiana.

I'm in the same boat. I need to renew my license also (which of course has a block on it). I'm headed to the OMV Express this morning & will let you know how it goes.

Are the phone lines still bogged down? I don't feel like being on hold three hours for them to tell me they can't do anything

This has to be LA's biggest clusterfuxk of the year.

state won’t pursue any lapses older than 2006 that the agency couldn’t absolutely prove were insurance abuses.
So does anyone know if we'll get an official letter saying we are absolved?

And who is the governor of the State at this time? Why is anyone surprised?

Col. Mike Edmundson (head of LA State Police) was quoted as saying he told OMV employees to be more lenient on cases dated earlier than 2006. I didn't hear anything about sending out letters absolving anyone of anything. You still need to straighten it out with OMV.
There's a website that you can check to see if your DL is flagged. I believe there was a link provided earlier in this thread. Good luck.

LOL I surrended my LA DL when I was in TX. I surrendered my TX when I moved to AL...13.5 years ago.
I'll look into that..and I read where I need to talk to them too.
I have a Lake Charles PD officer working it on my behalf back home.

Went to OMV Express on Perkins/Seigen. Provided them with notarized bill of sale for vehicle traded last November. They removed the block & only charged the $18 service fee for using express. Renewed my license as well. She said they are inundated with these letters & most are BS. She said if you went last week, they were forced to collect the fine but those will all be refunded.

It seems like you still have to call if you want to get record cleared even if they decide yours cannot be proven, and you should call if you do not just want to hope they will mark your issue as one they cannot absolutely prove as far as them still attempting to collect the debt.
Not really sure how they expect anyone to know which letters they sent out for pre 2006 issues are ones they think can absolutely be proven to be abuses or cannot without sending out cleared or amended letters. Seems like they might still be basing "absolutely prove" on what comes up on phone call and not calling risks debt being collected.

I don't know if they consider ten years to be a more reasonable time frame for recording keeping or if even they realize that Katrina and Rita flooded a shitload of vehicles and filing cabinets in LA during 2005.
I can tell you this. I got a speeding ticket in NC after LSU beat UT in the SEC Championship game. 2003, maybe? Anyway, I lived in LA, but was working on a project in CA and missed my original court date. I eventually paid the fine and a giant late fee "court cost".
Anyhow, I renewed my LA DL at least twice after the ticket. A couple of years ago, I tried to renew, but my license was flagged by NC. It turns out that NC had "suspended" my license, although I never had a NC DL and I had already paid the speeding fine and late fee court costs. I had to pay those pricks another $50 or $150 (I can't remember which) on top of the $300 and something I'd already paid them. frickers...

That 225 number never gets answered I feel like. I've tried to call it in the past (ie non overload times) and have never gotten a person on it.

People need to be fired, impeached and otherwise publicly humiliated.
Seriously, there is gross incompetence at multiple levels of government if you are going to send out 1.2 million letters for a State with a population of 4 million and not think it through. On a scale that large, multiple people are responsible and should suffer consequences for this.
