That's some real bad stuff. Try anything else first. Anything.

Not half as bad as I would you at Sonic!

I know too many people personally who had bad stuff happen. Melatonin gives me strange dreams. Still trying to find a reasonable alternative.

Wife totaled her car because of Ambien.

Good luck.

This.

Truthfully, I’ll take it about once or twice a week. It really is the best night of sleep I get in the week. I awaken in nearly the same position I fell asleep in; quite unusual for me because I toss and turn. I also sleep straight through the night (about 6-7 hours); again, this is quite unusual for me because I rarely sleep more than 45 minutes to an hour at a time before I’m up for several minutes. It’s a wonder drug when I’m really wanting/needing a sound night of rest.

But, not gonna lie, I’ve taken it after a few beers and about 30 minutes later my legs feel like they’re extra heavy and like I’m walking through waist high water. Everything feels sluggish... but very relaxed. So a warning to you, it’s a balancing act, if you drink too much, or if you’re not the kind of person who is used to being drunk or high, then you can do some crazy shite. I knew a guy who awoke in a Walmart parking lot in his truck, 30+ miles away with zero recollection of how he got there.

I’m not advocating this to get high, just warning you that if you’re the kind of person who is easily affected by drugs (legal or otherwise) then I’d take it very easy with ambien.

But if you need a good night’s rest, I’ve tried lunesta and a couple of others, and ambien is the best out there.

Doxepin seems to work good for me. Used Ambien for about 4 years, then it only worked for a 2-hour period. Doxepin keeps me asleep.

Don't listen to someone this stupid. If you truly suffer from insomnia, ambien can be a fricking miracle.

If you take it as prescribed, you will likely never have an issue. Posters like this one should get a fricking lifetime ban.

I used ambien for about 3 years and started having memory issues. I recently quit and am switching to Lunesta as the Doctor says that it should resolve the memory issues. I have tried everything under the sun to help me sleep. Melatonin doesn't really help much and gives me some weird dreams. Insomnia sucks and I wish everyone here the best in finding what helps them.

Trazadone should be your first option

Trazodone is usually the first option prescribed. Problematically, it has about a 30 minute window for me. If I don't fall asleep in that initial "sleepy" phase, it's like I never took it.

I've been a true insomniac for over 30 years. Ambien is the only thing I've ever taken that allows me to sleep through a complete night.

If you take it as it's prescribed, there are almost zero side effects. The horror stories are almost invariably from people who took extra doses or took it with alcohol. 5-10 mg will NEVER have you wrecking your car in the middle of the night, and anyone who tells you that it does is a fricking liar.

Caveat - because it's addictive, I alternate it with melatonin 2 nights per week. Doesn't work as well, but I don't want to build up an addiction or resistance to ambien.

This. Ambien will destroy your short term memory. It’s not worth it.

This is the only legitimate side effect from regular use, imho. I've experienced it, but it goes away after switching to melatonin or doxylamine succinate for a couple of days.

That's not permanent. And it's not an issue if you suffer from insomnia, because your short term memory is already fricked.

It is absolutely fricking worth it if you haven't slept in days, weeks, or months. You people without sleep problems should really shut the frick up here. You don't know what you're talking about.

Trazodone is an anti depressant. It helps with sleep and that's what they give you in rehab as I just came off my 4th stint there

It might make you fall asleep easier but when you drink or smoke weed before bed it doesnt let you go in to the deep rem cycles.

Ambien is all I can depend on for a guaranteed 4-5 hours of solid sleep without waking up at all. I swear by it.

If my script runs out I’ll fall back to melatonin but I won’t fall asleep nearly as quickly and I don’t always stay asleep.

My experiences with Ambian have been pretty good. It's been a miracle drug for me, but I rarely take it. It helps me maintain a good sleep cycle when I'm traveling. I only take it when I'm ready for bed. I've taken it, sat in the easy chair watching TV, and woke up at 5:30 am in the same chair. In my pre-CPAP days, I would wake up to use the bathroom and literally bang into walls. It was funny, but I have stairs and I was concerned I would fall down the stairs. Side effects? Not many in my case. I have no tired, sluggish effect the next day. The one time it concerned me was a sleepwalk in my hotel room in Vegas. Surreal. I say I sleepwalked because I remember the layout of the unusual toom and banging my lower leg on a coffee table. I was about 5% conscious.
