The city is unlikely to flood.
I’d qualify that with ‘some’. There are quite a few areas in midtown and south side like Windsor Forest that flood with heavy rains. I’ve been gone since 2005 but knowing Savannah it’s doubtful they fixed it!
Also if a hurricane hits head on know that most of the city will flood. Much is at or below sea level except a portion of Hunter AAF.

Visited there for vacation a few years ago. It is like a mini version of New Orleans and more quaint. It has culture. I think there is crime like any city, but my perceived safety was far greater than New Orleans. I did not feel at risk walking around the town.
Houses are historic too. Good restaurants.

quote:except Savannah at this point isn't much different than Louisiana. Savannah isn't what it was 25 years ago. It was once one of the best areas in all of the south. It's been turned into a big ghetto.
here is no reason in the world to choose living in Louisiana over living in Savannah.

Is there something a stranger on a message board can write that will force you to convince your sister to make a life altering decision?
You've made ~10,000 posts on this site and you don't know that people come here for information? Hell I found a pool guy and refinanced my house through this site. Why are you being mean on a Sunday?

No kidding. I refinanced my house and changed my homeowners insurance to USAA because of a thread here. I saved $500 a year with extra coverage. Never even would have worried about it without this site and that post.

I was only there for about 4 months but I will say if you like to run or bike don’t get a place downtown. It goes from good to bad block by block in some areas. I liked the barrier islands but it sucks if you work on the other side of town. Pooler has some good places to live as well.

I’ll echo what others have said here.
I work in Savannah, live in Bluffton. Lots to do, Hilton Head is great, boating/coastal area is a lot of fun. Savannah is an awesome food town and definitely unique. One downside, as with most places, real estate market has lots it’s mind around here.

Do you like New Orleans? It's like a mini New Orleans, but less fun and less shite to do. Lots of hipsters and punks and also loaded with cultcha. Not too far a drive to find some baws. The squares in the old part of town are nice and have a similar feel to the nicer parts of Uptown.
Would like to visit again. Wouldnt want to live there.

Lew- I like your old Avatar better.
SteelerBravesDawg- once again I find myself vehemently disagreeing with you, what's your problem? I agree Savannah is a great place, but for totally different reasons. Firstly, River St sucks. Secondly, the Crab Shack sucks. Thirdly, the only reason that ice cream tastes so good is because it's hot as frick and you've been walking for miles on cobblestone.

The city of Savannah is kind of a ghetto shithole but Georgia is a better state than Louisiana. Better/growing economy and closer to good beaches/mountains.

OP:
Savannah is prettier than New Orleans. Every street corner looks like a post card.
Savannah allows open containers on the street, just like New Orleans. However, Savannah isn't as overrun with tourists as New Orleans, outside of St Patricks day.
Savannah, while hot, isn't as oppressive as New Orleans. The weather is generally milder.
Savannah is hurricane proof.
Tybee is the closest beach, but it's kinda trashy by 30A standards. When you live there, you find yourself not going to the beach that often anyway. Tybee is a place you'll go when friends come to visit and really want a beach day.
Georgia coastal fishing isn't as good for sea trout, but it is as good or better than SELA for all other inshore species. I'll put that on my momma and my dead homies.
Georgia offshore fishing is not as good, mainly because you have to go a lot further out to get to deep water. But once you get out there, the fishing is great in the Sargasso Sea, plenty of wrecks and reefs to fish.
It's 3.5 hours from the largest international passenger airport in the world that can get you almost anywhere non-stop, 7 days a week.
Regarding cultcha- this might be a subject if we are comparing Savannah to places like Charleston or Ashville, but when comparing to New Orleans, it's not even worth a conversation.
Multiple hospitals, big port, decent sized military presence, a good solid mid-sized economy with plenty of jobs. Similar to NOLA but smaller.

The barrier islands will always take the brunt of a hurricane before it gets onto the mainland. Between the islands and the natural half "C" curviture of the Georgia coast both Savannah and Brunswick are naturally protected.
The curviture saved Savannah from being hit by Hugo in '91.

If you are talking about Savannah, you are dead arse wrong.
The whole downtown is built on a natural 40' bluff over the Savannah River. The average elevation of the whole state of Florida is 6'.

I'll admit to posting weird things. Will you admit it's also weird that you will copy and paste your opinions about things and post them across multiple forums here, to make sure as many people as possible will see it?

The crime might be slightly less bad overall, but it's much less segregated than here.
They buy into the whole yt owes me something narrative a lot more than here, and will go into nicer areas in numbers to mug and rob, and it's more blatantly about race than it is targeting someone with money in their wallet.
Had a friend's sister get mugged and die after leaving a debutante party with friends. And that was years before the current levels of political and race animosity.

Savannah is underwhelming. I always heard it was like a smaller, very charming NOLA type place. Doesn't compare at all. Some beautiful architecture, but NOLA is in a league of its own. It also had much more cultcha than I expected.
