Typical 6am commute was 30mins to M Street but afternoons stretched 1:15
Friday PM commutes were 2 hrs. I’d recommend a place near a mass transit station

If you're 30 and married and plan on having kids soon, I'd highly recommend buying in West Springfield, Burke, Fairfax.
Youll be close enough to downtown that it won't be soul crushing but you'll be living in a nice area with a good community and good schools.

frick these people mentioning anything on the beltway further than Arlington/Alexandria. The commute will make your life hell.

Commute: Reston VA is nice and affordable. Subway runs out there as well. Alexandria is very nice but quite expensive to be in the suburbs.

on 12/29/20 at 5:55 pm to Tigerfan56Check out Cleveland Park. It's in Northwest DC. Great walking neighborhood with lots of bars and restaurants. Rock Creek Park is nearby for awesome hiking.

If outside DC and on the VA side - I’d say Old Town Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax (the city), Reston. I don’t know the Maryland side that well, I went to HS in Fairfax County.
Maybe NW DC? Adams Morgan?

Public transportation is very viable. My uncle took the Virginia Express train from Fredericksburg into the city every day.

The traffic and property values are miserable. I was in high school and we lived in Springfield VA and it took my parents over an hour to commute into DC every day coming and going for just 10 miles each way. Everybody that lived there hated it and and wanted out.
$650K may get you a 2 BR townhome in Georgetown or Arlington, but you could use public transportation to get to and from work instead of driving. The subway/bus system is excellent.

on 12/29/20 at 6:02 pm to Tigerfan56Couple things to keep in mind. Not as bad as NYC but landlords want to get places occupied that have become vacant. Just got confirmation, from someone close, that they live in a 2 bed, 2 bath, nice place and area (DC) for $2800 a month.
Your 3500 is well within range.
I am almost always in favor of buying but if you could rent for a year that would give you a chance to check all these areas out and make a good decision.
