I know a guy who commutes to work in Springfield and lives in PA so it’s doable.

The 80s were rough, the city collapsed, but the 90s were kind to the city, and by the early 2000s DC had developed a great food scene and it was gentrify rapidly.

JFK called it a city with northern charm and southern efficiency, but I loved the museums, the classical buildings, the galleries. It was a fun place to grow up

Policies do have consequences, and the decision to decriminalize homelessness, drug use, graffiti, and littering in major cities is having an effect across the country, but also in DC.

A friend in DC told me the rich are moving back to the country again.

My one practical observation, the beltway is undrivable for long stretches of the day. I wouldn’t make it part of your commute.

yea my DC office we had people take the train/bus from Delaware, West Virginia, lot from Baltimore and even a couple from Richmond. nah

I have no idea how low income and middle income people make it there. I considered myself lower middle income when I was there.

I understand they commute but I wasnt saving a ton of money even though I wasn’t technically check to check for the most part. Made 85-110K. I was there- trying to keep up with the lifestyle of late 20/early 30 go getters.

COVID has sped this up more than anything.

Housing prices in the DC suburbs are skyrocketing while demand in the city proper is way down

That makes sense.

I assume they shut down all public life?

I see the headlines about robberies in Georgetown - is crime coming back?

Not shutdown like Los Angeles County for instance, but pretty restricted. Virginia less so.

Crime is definitely way up including in Arlington. We lived right near the East Falls Church metro which is a nice area and since March had 4 car break ins which was never an issue before. Moved out to Reston after that.

I’d have to assume Reston is safe, does the metro extension make it more accesible to crime though?

Slightly, but it's a trade off of having it available and close to get into the city when needed. So far, there hasn't been a noticable increase here as far as I can tell.

I’ve noticed this some too. I know a lot of people buying ranch homes and such outside of Manassas and other similar areas.

Anybody mentioning crime on here make sure you make it relevant. The amount of crime outside of se dc is minuscule compared to other big cities and the suburbs. The only reason you know crime happens here is that it’s plastered literally everywhere when it happens because it never really happens.

For instance - Fairfax County had around 1.2 million residents and may have had 2 murders all of last year.

Sure there are pockets, but even living in Reston and especially now Leesburg, I have NEVER been scared to leave my house unlocked while walking in the neighborhood or to roam the streets in the middle of the night.

I lived in Alexandria before moving to Fairfax, I’d never go walking alone in Alexandria at night unarmed.

City of Alexandria or Fairfax county Alexandria. As I mentioned, certain pockets everywhere but not like New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Not even close anywhere other than SE DC.

This. Loudoun County is very safe.

The public schools are top-notch, infrastructure is new/modern and there are great neighborhoods.

I lived in DC (Friendship Heights) and now reside in Rockville. What area of DC are you going to be working?

In Virginia, there’s the VRE and Maryland there’s the MARC. I take the MARC daily from Rockville and get off at Union Station. It’s about a 30-45 min ride, depending on which train you get on.
