I lived in Capitol Hill while in DC for a project. My office was close to the Capitol so it was an easy walk to work.
Considering you don’t have kids yet, I suggest living in the city for a year or two to make it easy to explore. I didn’t see you mention where you’re working, but Capitol Hill, DuPont Circle and Logan Circle, Adam’s Morgan, Foggy Bottom, and Georgetown are all good places to live.
The city is mostly dead at night, but there are still some great pockets of activity to hang out. The museums are great. They have some amazing restaurants, so make sure to get out and try new places. Union Market is a favorite (especially if you live in Capitol Hill). DC is a great jumping off point, by car or train, to visit other cities and areas on the east coast and north east, so plan some fun trips while you’re there.

This. Loudoun County is very safe.
The public schools are top-notch, infrastructure is new/modern and there are great neighborhoods.
I live in Ashburn. I couldn’t think of a safer place to live. It’s the American dream.

Agree. Very nice place to live.
I also love St. John and the BVIs. Been many times over the years.
We should get drunk sometime and swap true tall tales.

Ignore the peasants. DC is an incredible city for young people. Live there regardless of the cost and enjoy.

Lived in Woodley Park for a bit. Enjoyed DC, but most people are snobby/pretentious. Very liberal. And frick the cold.

I live in the DC area. frickin sucks. Winter is dumb as shite and cold as fuxk here. Expensive as shite. Traffic blows.

I’m most definitely down for that.

In fact, the idea of living in the Capital Hill area jumps out as intriguing to me.
I live in Capitol Hill. It's a great neighborhood for families. Strong sense of community here

You can tell the people who have lived there and paid the property taxes. They’re hefty hefty hefty.
Apparently DC has the 5th LOWEST in the country. Illinois 2nd highest, but we coming for Jersey.

Blessed to be exempt or I'd be moving.

Everyone here will tell guy it sucks while they live in the biggest, most poorly run shithole in the country known as Louisiana.

Wife and I lived in downtown DC for 2 years while I went to grad school at GWU 10 years ago, think it was around 2300 for 700 sqft 1 BR apartment with 2 underground parking spots.
Then we had a baby in 2012 after I graduated, moved to Clarendon/courthouse area in Arlington and paid 3200 for 1300 sqft 2 BR apartment with parking. Stayed there for almost a year.
We wanted to stay but daycare would have been 1500$ a month for one child.... we moved to Williamsburg, VA and got everything half off but same salaries.
We loved living in the city, walked everywhere, would love to be back... just too hard to live there with kids unless you are really loaded.
And now we are stuck in Louisiana again because we moved back in 2017 to watch my mom die a slow death... but her family still lives here

Made 85-110K. I was there- trying to keep up with the lifestyle of late 20/early 30 go getters.
Listen man.
I understand.
DC is definitely an expensive place to live.
And if you try to live like you're in the upper crest top 1% person it is indeed unaffordable.
But if you're in your late 20s and early 30s trying to live like that then that is more on you trying to live a lifestyle you can't afford when you don't have to.
There is no reason someone making that salary - or even less - can't live fairly comfortable and enjoy themselves in DC as so many do now (myself included).
If you were in your late 20s trying to roll with the wealthiest and oldest citizens of this city even if you couldn't afford it... well that's your own financial irresponsibility man.
ETA: As some have mentioned - I'm a single man so it is just fine and super convenient to be able to walk/metro anywhere. Having a family is a completely different equation.

Hope they’re paying you a lot.

My son lives there. I hope your job gives you a cost of living adjustment because “the rent is too damn high”. When I looked at a job up there the company gave you a 25% increase on your base because of housing costs. Do your best to live near a Metro station.

I was single and spent a lot on entertainment and going out. Beyond my means? Somewhat.
I wouldn’t trade the experience though. Got my masters up there and lived that life for three years.

I know what you mean and I understand the temptation.
Simply going out to a bar with a date can be surprisingly more expensive than if you were anywhere in the Deep South.
I try not to spend too much on another means though - music halls etc - unless I have to.
I love the $5 Nats tix though. A great deal for any Braves fan.
