Anyone here own and fly your own plane?

First off I'm not talking a OT baller Learjet. I'm talking a used Cessna. Flying my own plane is something I've always wanted and wanted to learn how to do. I've not had the first flying lesson, or looked at my first plane yet. I would like to hear from some OT pilots on the headache, time, expense, how many hours I would need to have under my belt to be certified to fly, and own a single prop Cessna. Also would you feel safe flying a used Cessna between 45K-70K or should I up my life insurance the same day I purchase plane?

Not to dissuade you, but how many first class tickets to anywhere you wanted to go could you buy with 70k?
Oh and my uncle died flying a Cessna into a mountain.

Professional airline pilot here.
First, awesome that you're thinking about getting your license! Good luck!
Second, way to early to be worrying about airplane ownership. No problem safety-wise flying a single engine Cessna/Beech, etc in the $40-70K range as long as it has been maintained properly. As they say, if it flies, floats or f**** it's cheaper to rent. Pay for lessons which can include the "wet" (gasoline included) rate for the plane and see if you like it. Much more cost-effective to find out if flying is for you and possibly even give you some ideas about what type of aircraft (high wing/low-wing) you prefer if you do decide to follow through and buy. Just being around pilots and airplanes at your local airport will give you an excellent idea of what it costs to own/maintain/park/insure an airplane in your neck of the woods.
Flying yourself is awesome! Good luck!

There are flight schools all over. I recommend flying with at least 2 instructors to find one you really like. A good instructor makes all the difference. Rent a Cessna 172 and do your training in that. Budget $7k for plane rental, instructor lessons, books, testing, etc. You need 30 hours with an instructor and 10 solo before taking your checkride, but most people do more. Stay with it- two weeks off of training and you will start making excuses. If you are diligent you should have your private rating in 4 months.
If you like the 172, consider the Cessna 182, Piper Warrior, Diamond DA20, etc.

It's always been a dream of mine to get my PPL. My wife recently bought me an 1hr long "introductory to flight" from our local flight school. It actually counts as a logged hour towards my license.

My father was a corporate pilot his whole civilian life (Air Force before that). The day he retired he told me "son, if you ever own a plane make sure you're the one riding in it. Not flying it."
Sadly, neither has been an option (yet).

My buddy is a pilot and fly's a La billionaire's private jet. I've gone for a ride and sat in the cockpit, but that's as close as I get to owning & flying my own plane

honestly, unless you're truly OT baller, don't get a personal plane. it's a money pit.
there are much better things you can invest your money in to help you achieve OT baller status. once there, then you can look at getting your own plane.
eta: I've been around planes all my life. my dad has flown his planes and helicopters as long as I can remember

Buddy of mine just bought a 172 cesna. He is now taking flying lessons. Says it costs $300/mo to store it at BR airport. I'd imagine it is a very expensive hobby

I would get a number of ratings before considering buying my own plane if I were you.
Is this going to be a hobby you pick up or a profession you are thinking of getting into?
