Other thing to keep in mind, is that unless you just love to fly, there comes a point where even flying your own plane is not cost beneficial to commercial depending upon distance flying. Fuel costs and operating costs of flying personal plane 4-6 hours or more may cost you more than flying commercial.

Flown 172's and 206's. Used to have fraction ownership of the 172.

You can get a decent Cessna for 25-40k. Partial ownership brings your cost down. Inspections and maintenance is kind of expensive but again it helps if you're in with someone else.

My father was a pilot, so I grew up around airplanes. I have my private pilot's license and fly every couple weeks or so down here. It's a lot of fun to take friends/dates on city tours (I'm in Nola). I'd recommend renting the plane as well. I've thought about buying a plane, but currently don't have sufficient funds or fly enough to buy yet. It's a fun, yet expensive, hobby.

For people with more money than sense, please don't start out by buying an SR-22. We need you to stay on the rant.

This is going to sound like a joke:
A friend of mine, who is an operator, has been sneaking lessons the last few months and just bought a cessna.
I have given him an insane amount of shite for it.

You can store a plane at a small airport for a lot less. Ama field in st Charles is $75 a month. Grass runway though.

Fractional ownership is the way to go.
Form a LLC and own the plane add equal members.
Flying is very expensive. It's $100 an hour to rent an older Cessna or Piper and $130 to rent a newer one and $155 to rent a glass cockpit Cessna.
I went to flight school of new orleans.
Though I would get my ground done in Hammond it's only $500 for the entire ground course ave it's accelerated.
I would also get my physical first. Would suck to buy the books and start flying then find out your undiagnosed diabetic or color blind and can't fly.
Get you a good set of Davy Clark's on eBay too, the ones the school loans out smell like curry.

It's always been a dream of mine to get my PPL. My wife recently bought me an 1hr long "introductory to flight" from our local flight school. It actually counts as a logged hour towards my license.
DO IT. You'll never regret it. I started working on my PPL about a month ago and can't get enough of it. Really struggling with radio communication stuff right now, but loving every bit of it. There is actually financing available if you need it - through a company called Pilot Finance. I didn't have $10K just sitting around, so that's what I opted to go with. Cheaper than a car payment and a whole hell of a lot more beneficial overall, IMO.
Wish I had seen this thread before I started one kinda on the same topic.

Where you flying out of? I had to get good at radio because I flew out of a class D airspace airport that is right on class B and in a Mode C veil.
Constant traffic from all directions. Fun area to Cross country.
I remember doing a go around at BTR on a XC and seeing two Deltas waiting for me, those passengers had to be mad.
I did fumble with forgetting to read back commands especially from ground.

Training to be a pilot is more beneficial than an actual vehicle? No.

My mother in laws ex husband bought a plane for his business. He didn't fly though. He had a pilot. It didn't get used all that much but he had to fly to conferences several times a year and talking to other business owners at those he wanted to be part of the club that flew there in their own plane. Bought some used double prop.
We went with him to Chicago one time. Due to weight we couldn't fuel it to capacity and had to stop in Kentucky to refuel. It was nice being able to park at the private airstrip behind the commercial airport and walk straight to the plane.
They actually flew from south Alabama to Birmingham one time just to visit and fly us around. He wanted to take lessons and learn to fly himself but said he'd never fly it alone. Liked having a pilot with him in case something went wrong.
He would take the controls during flight every now and then. I actually took them once on that trip to Chicago. Pretty neat. If anything I would want to learn to fly a helicopter instead. I've met a few of those pilots and although the range of a plane isn't there the ability to take off and land pretty much anywhere is nice.
