Wow, I never would have guessed so many people here were familiar with the area. Lots of good information here, very much appreciated.
I think a few others, like myself, came over here when the UW/LSU series was scheduled and never left. So decent Wisconsin representation on the board.
To add to the outdoor thing...Wisconsin has as many lakes as Minnesota, and may have more depending on how you define a lake.

I've experienced -20 here and it's different than any kind of cold you've ever seen in the south, even up in the mountains
Complaining about 20. Lol
Try 30 days sub zero. Climate is much easier now.

Lived in Madison, great people, night scene was good

I know.
I’m saying one day or two is nothing compared to 30 straight.
There are far less lows now.

They can get some pretty brutal closed winters there. That’s the main thing that drove me back down south.

Brutal is relative. South Florida athletes are wearing parkas at 50 degrees. Lol
But I do get what you are saying. If you are from the south even the more temperate climate is still brutal.
Cold and overcast is much different than cold and sunny.
It is the gray that got to me

We had one day this winter where it was -50 with the wind chill. Then like two days later it was 30 degrees. That felt like 100 at the time, I was walking around in shorts.

Have not lived in Wisconsin but did live in the Grand Rapids MI area for 4 years. And traveled the entire state of Wisconsin for work the entire time. .
Great people, and lots of outdoor stuff. Be prepared for winter
It’s long and gray. Lots of clouds from October thru at least March. And cold. Summers are nice but can be very short. Sometimes will not warm up till June and then will have cool days all summer. Not 70ish but cold and rainy 60’s from time to time and by mid September it’s chilly again.
Lots of hunting and fishing. Madison is a great college town. North of Madison to Milwaukee pretty sparse as far as population.
People tend to be friendly and as one other poster mentioned beer drinking is a sport. Lots of crafts and local breweries. I couldn’t take the winters so we moved after 4 years back to Louisiana. Also to me all the Midwest states never met a tax the didn’t like. It’s just generally more expensive to live.
Good luck!

I grew up just south of Madison and graduated from the UW. Love the city and the vibe, love the state, the people are incredible and I miss it dearly and get back often. That being said, I would never move back full-time because of the weather. After graduation I moved to LA for grad school then to Scottsdale and much prefer the warmer/hot weather to the extreme cold but the state does have so much to offer in the summer and fall. When I retire my goal is to have a home in Scottsdale and another on a lake somewhere in WI.
Heading back there for 10 days in July and looking forward to having a Spotted Cow while overlooking the lake at the Terrace at the Union and fishing on a lake in Minoqua. Good times!

My home state.
There's no getting around the weather. But for the days when it's still like 20-25 degrees and sunny with snow on the ground, a lot of fun can be had. Ice fishing, ice skating, skiing, sledding, or just a snowball fight. And fresh snowfall under dim street lights is just poetically beautiful.
Summer and fall weather kicks arse.
Explore something outdoorsy. I don't care what, just enjoy some of the natural beauty. Take a bike up to Chequamegon (pronounced SHWA-meh-gon), go pick some cherries in Door County, go west and see the fall colors in La Crosse. There are rivers and lakes everywhere and the state has a very strong hunting culture.
I love WI. Treat 'er well if life takes you there.

Pretty accurate. The entire northern part of the state is the "northwoods" and consists of lakes, forests, and tons of little vacation and resort towns that fill up with FIBs in the summer.
My dad has been a snowbird for the last 20 years so he's getting the best of both WI (up by Eagle River) and FL.

Not a ton to add that my fellow Wisconsin natives haven’t covered. It’s the lack of sun and length of winter that got to me, moreso than the occasional below zero day.
-Most areas have good public schools, in case that’s important.
-Unless you are in the middle of a forest it’s difficult to be more than a mile from a bar
-There’s always tons going on in the summer since everyone wants to enjoy every minute of nice weather
-Despite the climate, there are a lot of excellent golf courses
-As mentioned, lakes everywhere
-Being on the western side you don’t get nearly as much lake effect snow as some other areas in the midwest/northeast

I lived in Cleveland for a year. Once you get used to the cold, everything is fine. Don’t let that be the reason you don’t go.
