Interesting thread for me. My girlfriend is from Milwaukee and we will be moving to Madison in the next year (getting married and starting a family). I'm nervous about the winters (from Louisiana) but have promised her I'll give it a try for a few years.

Here's a take from an IL guy ((non-Chicago, thank goodness), I really like WI and have wanted to live there. It will be cold, very cold sometimes, but that's just part of it. For those who say you'll get used to it, they're lying. I don't care if they are lifers from there, or not, the midwest and WI get cold as shite. The good thing is that spring and the fall are absolutely beautiful, take advantage of that. The summer in WI can get warm and humid, but WI is more relaxing than IL. If you like the outdoors, you'll be in heaven driving up there and seeing the country side. Living in a blue state (IL), red area, I will say the people are more relaxed in WI. You have your country people and city libs. For those who said Madison isn't liberal, it's very liberal and WI people in general don't know how to shut up. That's a good thing as the people of WI are very yappy, as some said, but there very extreme left loonys there. Weird to say, nothing wrong with legal Hispanics, but there is quite a few Hispanics in WI. One of my Roommates in the Marines was from there, and he barely spoke English, great guy though. They do have a lot of great outdoor things, and tons of festivals - which are awesome to go to around the state. I'd say if you need adventure, go try it

Go find a walk-in beer cave and then imagine it being an additional 50 degrees colder.
