My son has been on focalin since age 6. He's an honor roll student off of it but he will make silly mistakes like skipping a whole page of a test or leave books at school. While off the medication he has a hard time being quiet and not acting silly, he also struggles in the sports he play. While on the medication he throwing no hitters and winning swimming meets. He's 12 now and we just started seeing a wellness doctor to try a more natural approach instead of the meth based medication.

My 8 year old has ADHD. Structure is paramount. He has a checklist everyday of every task he must accomplish in order to get screen time (iPad, Switch, etc...) on electronics, but no more than 30 minutes/day during week and an hour on weekend. We do allow him additional time on the wii or old school 8 bit Nintendo right now since winter, but only on weekend.

Behavior at school was an issue, simply couldn’t focus, stay in his seat, talking,etc...so his teacher has a checklist for him now also and has helped him out.

Caffeine works wonders for ADHD. So does Omega 3’s. If you can get a little coffee milk down him with a tiny omega it won’t hurt, just start on weekend since it could cause stomach issue at first.

Good luck

Love these threads where people weigh in and have no clue what they're talking about.

Ever smoke weed and get ADD really bad? You know how that feels? Probably not... Where you can't keep a thought in your head cause your brain is racing 1000 mph.

My son is on meds for ADD and seizures. He can barely finish a sentence off his meds. He doesn't climb shite or anything like that. Also he has had 6 seizures due to his condition. His neurologist, based on his EEGs, determined his condition is due to the neurons in a spot in his right lobe misfiring. MRIs came back clean for tumors, thank goodness.

I guess clinical depression is just a person being a little sad to you huh? Tell them to be happy and stop pretending!

Educate yourself.

As someone who has been on amphetamines since 2nd grade. I can tell you that your child wont stop taking them once they are out of school. Just something to think about. There isnt a lot of research on the long term effects but something tells me that I will pay for it later having been on this shite for 20+ years. If I forget to take it, I am useless at work. So looks like it's a lifetime thing for me.

My son was diagnosed with ADHD at 8, he was on meds from 1st to 8th grade and did great in school academic wise which was a good thing. Bad thing is he had a shite attitude, was moody and you couldn't talk to him.

Over the summer he stopped taking it and socially hes 100 times better. shite attitude is gone, he talks and interacts and jokes around. Just an all around better kid to be around. Bad thing is that his grades have dropped, only slightly, which is probably more due to going to HS, and the laziness of a teenage boy. Overall, I'm glad to have my son off of stimulants.

I don’t believe in ADHD I think it’s a made up sickness for people that are lazy and don’t care or for kids who are given too much sugar and not enough real parenting

Supposedly the medications only work on average 9-11 months then you need to change.

Yes. And I was one of the ones that thought it was BS voodoo crap and those types of kids just need their arse beat.

He was diagnosed early and we tried every non medicated way to combat it. Finally went to medicine when he was falling too far behind in school. Took a long time to get the right dosage. The hardest years were between 7-13. Was so bad we would have to medicate him on weekends because he would destroy things without thinking. He was never a bad or disrespectful kid. He just could not control himself and would act on impulse.

My six year old started taking focalin about five months ago and we can tell a world of difference at school and at home. I was really worried in the beginning it would make him a “zombie”but the medicine hasn’t done that at all. We have been pleasantly surprised

I don’t have ADD or ADHD, when I take Adderall I work better and I’m more focused. I don’t understand how it “works” for me if I’m not ADD or ADHD

When it's real (and there are real cases of it [not as prevalent as some think]) it can be very frustrating for child and parent until the correct medication level is established. I probably had it but am old enough for it never to have been formally diagnosed. I was "hyper" and started drinking coffee at 10 (the theory [correct, actually] was that stimulants work in reverse for hyperactive kids).

Thankfully, my kids did not inherit it. Good luck. It sounds like you are in the right path. You and he just need to be patient. You may want to get someone to work with him on those nascent self-esteem issues.

My oldest kid had ADD - not really hyperactive, just attention problems. This was over 15 years ago, before it was so overdiagnosed. Had him tested by a child psychologist when he was around 5th or 6th grade. Put him on Ritalin and it was an instant night amd day difference. His teachers were amazed at the changes and he did well in school. A couple years later it started really affecting his appetite and he was losing too much weight (was already a skinny kid). Switched to another med and he just didn’t like the way it made him feel -sort of zombie-like. Got off the meds and high school was hell.

Need some info about the kid. If it’s an 8-16 year old boy, he doesn’t have shite. He’s just a boy. Do some activities that teach patience and focus and teach him there’s a time and a place to sit down and be still.

This isn’t true. I used to think like this until my nephew came along. He’s 6, and he’s on ADHD medication.

His behavior was extreme. He was literally jumping everywhere 24/7. He was incapable of settling down.

Even if he was watching a movie and it miraculously had his attention, he could not stop fidgeting. Like, he’d be laying on his stomach watching TV, and he would have to kick his feet up and down like crazy. And then stand on his head and flip over and just keep moving around like crazy.

I can’t even explain in words how extreme it was. He was incapable of sitting still for 30 seconds no matter how much you’d try to get him to.

He was having trouble in school. You couldn’t teach him anything at school or at home because he could not stop moving and could not focus on what you are saying. He was hitting other kids, hitting the teacher, etc. He was like a maniac on some kind of drugs or something. And he was angry.

So my brother and his wife RELUCTANTLY put him on medication. The first medicine the doctor put him on was terrible. Turned him into a zombie. Had no personality. Didn’t even want to talk when he was on it. Would just sit there like an expressionless zombie. Not good.

They finally got the medicine and dosage right to where he still has his personality, and he still jumps around.. but a normal amount of jumping around. You can get him to stop for a while if he gets too rambunctious. And he’s not angry anymore. He’s much happier. The medicine does a great job of just taking the edge off for him so he’s not so out of control, yet still acts like a kid.

There may be an issue with kids who don’t really need medication who are being put on medication. But in my nephew’s case, he 100% needed it.

My middle son started taki g it at 9. He had issues with impulse and focus. We went through the full psychoanalysis, and he hit all the markers for ADHD.

After he started a low dose of focalin we saw dramatic improvement. He started to do chores when he noticed they needed to be done, his conduct at school got better, his grades went from B's to A's, and he stopped back talk.

The medicine does not zone him out. He is still goofy and affable while on it. He still plays with his friends, he still does sports, and actually does better at them.

The big drawback is he does not eat well while on the medicine. Somedays he doesn't touch his lunch, and that often triggers migraines. He also has trouble sleeping some nights.

My best advice is dont just rely on the questionnaire your pediatrician will give you. Do the full study. Have your kid observed. Have them talk to the psychologist. It is expensive, but it will pinpoint things more precisely, and also show if accomodations are necessary.

Also start with low does. Some kids start at like 20 mils. My son started at 10 and in middle school still only takes 15.

I have a 6 yo who is ADHD and a 5yo who is not. Speak to a pediatrician and read about it online. Most here wouldn't know how to answer your questions because they have never fought the battle. I see it from both ends and children who are not treated in some manner can ruin a class atmosphere for everyone else.

I have a 13 year old who was diagnosed at 7 or 8. The teachers and school pushed me to do it, calling me all the time about her "problems" got me upset and made me think something was the matter with her.

I got her tested she had ADHD. So we put her on medication, which made her focus more in school. But after a month I quit giving it to her, she didn't want to take it, and to be honest I felt really guilty about it also.

At 13, I'm glad I made the decision to quit the medication. Even if she is "ADHD" she taught herself to learn how to deal with it herself. She's all As and B's, been in TAG since 1st grade (both gifted and talented, art), beta since 4th/5th.

I think you need to look at your kid and their personality. if your kid has a problem you should be able to tell this isn't normal. Just because a kid doesn't meet what someone else qualifies as normal, doesn't mean run out and throw them on medication, that mostly likely they will be dependent on for the rest of their life.

I had ADHD one time when I was about 8.
My teacher told my dad and he cured me when I got home.
