I remember being a 10 year old kid in 1961 and riding in the car to serve Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. The song, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" came on the radio as we were driving. When I heard the line, "Through the years we all will be together, if the Fates allow . . ." I was immediately saddened thinking about how badly I'd feel when my grandparents passed away. For almost the last 57 years, I get that same ill feeling every time I've heard that line.

Yes, I always miss my sister, but especially around the holidays. With my dad passing Thursday I'm pretty sure I am going to hate Thanksgiving for a very long time.

We started posting around the same time but I didn't get to post in your previous thread. Sorry for your loss and hope everything gets better. It will.

As an adult, I’ve never really been in to the holidays. Even less now since my dad died in November 2013. I would be just fine if I could just skip October, November and December.

I do like New Year’s Day because there’s good food and football and it signifies the end of the holiday season.

Yes, second go round thru holidays without my wife. Memories or thoughts last 15-20 seconds but occur probably 30 times a day during holidays instead of 2-3 times a day

No, but I realize everyone is different. I'm 38 and my wife passed when I was 33 (she was 30). The first couple of years were rough but after a bit, the switch flipped. Occasions like holidays, and places we frequented together started to stop being sad and became more of an emotion that elicited smiles and fond memories.

My mom died with leukemia last August(2017) and this year I was bringing out the tree to decorate. She helped my 8y/o daughter for years decorate it. I stepped aside and let them have that time together but when I got the tree this year I just got overwhelmed with emotion just wanting her to be back to decorate the tree just one last time. The tears fell!

I had a dearly loved older brother who passed away right after Thanksgiving in 2006. I think about him most around this time and miss him a lot.

I’m definitely feeling way down this holiday season, but it has nothing to do with dead relatives. Granted, I’ve pretty much been down all the time for a while. Divorce sucks, kids, almost as bad as poverty, daily Baton Rouge traffic, SEC Officiating, and living with your parents in your late 20’s.

Yep. After my Mom passed a few years ago having no folks left was a complete reset.

After losing my little brother last month it’s a fricking beatdown.

Still put up the lights and totally love the holiday spirit, but it’s a different deal now. Hug your family and tell them you love them while you have them.

I try not to be down. I love thinking of my lost loved ones over the holidays. I miss them, but that because of happy memories. That’s my focus. Still brings some moist eyes though.

The first holidays without my mom were a little rough. Thinking about calling and/or visiting her and then catching myself "Oh, that's not possible not only this year, but for the rest of my life" was a tough little emotional hill to get over.

It's been 3 years now, and it gets easier every year. There are twinges of sadness that pop up, but I've come to realize how lucky I was to be raised by her, and accept that her death was an unavoidable part of life, and many people had a worse hand dealt to them.

December 4th will be 2 years since my daughter passed away. I dont go a day without thinking of her but it certainly gets harder as that day approaches.

How many years does this take? It’s been five for me and everything still hurts badly. For me, it was a lifelong (since we were 10) best friend that died tragically in a vehicle crash.
