Congratulations on your son. Please tone down on drinking if you can. I’ve already lost everything and it’s too late to get my family back. Don’t make that mistake. Not to preach, but it definitely fricks up your family life if it’s too bad.
Thanks for the advice on those meds. I have a VA appointment next week so I will ask.

Probably the unspoken worst part about quitting drinking is finding out all your "friends" were really just "drinking buddies".
Boy, isn't this the truth. Most of my "friends" have stopped reaching out to me to do things since I don't drink anymore.
I'm 8 weeks without alcohol now. It was time. I drank nearly every day, but it could range from a single beer to almost a fifth of bourbon.
Here's what I've noticed:
- I'm not tired any more. I'm awake and alert all day long and don't have this feeling of being sleepy or tired during the day.
- I've lost weight. Not only am I losing weight since I'm not drinking those empty calories, but I'm also making better food choices.
- My skin is clearer. My face isn't as puffy. My girlfriend keeps commenting that I look healthier.
- No more hangovers. Even though I thought I wasn't hungover, I was a little hungover. It feels good to not have something holding me back.
Looking back, alcohol definitely played a part in the way my marriage ended. It wasn't everything, but it certainly made things worse/harder. And I was about to lose the best relationship I've ever had due to alcohol. My kids (both grown, no pics) are happy about it and wish I had quit sooner. So do I.
Do I miss alcohol? Yes and no. I don't miss the effects, but I do miss the taste of a good Old Fashioned or hoppy double IPA. I miss that more than I do the buzz. But I know that I can't go back. Ever. Could I have a drink and be OK? Yes. But I never know when that drink will turn into 10 drinks, and I can't ever go back to being that person. So that means I will always need to be at 0 drinks.

I'll be praying for you brother.
All things work together for good for those who love the Lord. Gotta believe.

If you're drinking because you have to drink, not because you want to drink, it's time to get some help. And don't quite cold turkey if you're at that point, like others said it can kill you.
If you have the shakes, you're at that point. I speak from experience.

I quit altogether years ago. Wouldn’t say I was a heavy drinker or borderline alcoholic, just more of a binge drinker when being younger and going out. I quit that and drinking just because it was conflicting to my work and lifestyle and not who I wanted to be. I hated being hungover or not 100%.
I also felt like I could easily fall into the trap. I didn’t drink because I liked the taste, but the way I felt. With that said, having 1-2 beers did nothing for me. I drank more for the buzz and basically until I passed out or was outright drunk. Just not something I need in my life.

About 1.5-2 bottles of wine per night. Half a bottle of liquor if it’s a liquor night.
I was putting away about a pint of bourbon or vodka per day for a couple of years. Got my bloodwork done in 2024 and my liver enzymes were insanely out of whack. The numbers were worse at the beginning of this year and I knew I had to make a change immediately.
I tapered down over the course of a few months before stopping altogether and it was rough. I was sick for three or four days after the last drink, heart pounding, nausea; etc., so if you go this route you'll need to be very careful because it can kill you.
It's been a rough road but it's the best decision I could've made for me and for my family. Apparently I stopped just in time. Go get your bloodwork done, digest the bad news from your doctor, and start the process of turning it around now, before it's too late.

25 years sober this year. I actually quit drinking a few months after I turned 21. Pretty miserable for the first month or so but once I got passed that, no issues. I have zero cravings for a drink.

I did a few minutes ago. I'll let you know how things turn out.

if you're doing that every night you need to cut back man. It's going to destroy your health. The habit can be the hardest part to break. Try throwing in some premade mocktails or something and start cutting back. I only drink anything 2 nights a week and throw in mocktails to space it out.

There is no longer term upside to drinking.
I quit and replaced it with some sort of healthy alternatives...sex, gym, proper food, kid time..etc
Made life better. I do still drink a glass or whatever of wine...dinner w friends..Yada Yada
But waking up on a random weekday and being dehydrated and having headaches etc, just because of boredom and drinking....nope!

Congrats brother. I put it down late september just because I was planning on doing sober october. Sailed thru october and it felt so great i kept it going thru Nov. Been thru 2 weddings, thanksgiving and lots of football games and abstained. I see no reason to go back to it. The minimal upside is far outweighed by the negative effects especially as you get older.
I have seen all the same positives that you have seen and then some. It will be 90 days in a couple weeks.
I was only a weekend /holiday / vacation drinker but I realized if i truly want to achieve my health goals and sustain it, I couldnt keep negating my progress on weekends.
After about 3 weeks you can achieve what i call Total Freedom of the Mind. And that is better than any buzz.

Depends on how much you are drinking. There are meds that help big time with withdrawal.
If youre getting sick, I suggest inpatient treatment. They will detox you and then let you stay in a rehab program until you feel like you can handle it on your own.
Next Step program at Pine Grove in Hattiesburg is among the best.
Liver problems do not manifest until it is too late.

Autoimmune Hep discovered at 52 years old. Had to quit but I wasnt an abuser so I didnt get sick. But I do miss a nice cool beer on the boat/pool or a brown drink this time of year.

I quit drinking in 2018 due to health reasons. Best thing that ever happened to me. I don't even think about it anymore. I lost weight, my marriage got better, my career got better, etc.
The only negative is that situations and social functions can get boring. I also hate explaining it at social functions when people see me not drinking. I just get a soda water on the rocks in a short glass and people think I'm drinking and don't ask about it.

How sick did you get in the days after?
Twice...
First time was sick (withdrawals) for 3-4 days. Cold sweats hot then cold at night and couldn't sleep, throwing up bile in the mornings...
Second time I was only sick for a day with minor throwing up and only one night of cold sweats. Then hallucinations started and lasted for 3-4 days... couldn't sleep bc I kept hearing people talking in the room or in the other room... in the dark, I would see this fog type stuff in small forms and when I would grab it, it would turn into spider like things on my arm (nice ones). It was fricked. Because of that alone, I will NEVER drink again. Ever
Once the hard part is over, get you a support system. I was never a huge fan of AA, but there are other resources. I go to support group that meets weekly at a local church and I also go to basic alcoholic classes once a week...most of the time just to keep it fresh
